9300 Custom Paint - Copper Perl

This is my i9200. Paint used is Mitsubishi Copper Pearlescent. There is only few pics for now, none taken in the sunlight (color looks completely different in different conditions, it goes to bright orange in sun). I bondo-ed over Dell badge on LCD cover so I can put a decal of my choice. I also got a matching mouse, Logitech MX500.
This baby will be going to Ebay in a few days. Plastics were originaly intended for my 9300 but I will be keeping it, and I will give it another paintjob. Probably Viper blue/ white.

specs:

2.00Ghz
1Gb PC2700 Corsair ram
Radeon 9700 128mb
100GB 5400RPM

Nice job. I've been trying to decide if I should paint my 6000D or not. I think I might just give it a shot now. I'll probably order the lcd cover first and see how that comes out first. What did you spray it with? Was is actual automotive paint or was it the touch up cans of spray paint you can get? Anyway I really like how that turned out. Good job.

Personally i dont like the white stripes so i would colour those in aswell.... maybe colour them black.

Also noticed you left the hingle cover silver... any reason for this? think it would look cool if the hinge cover matched the side strips.

Oh and nice job! maybe you could paint my car.... all the local car paint shops suck.

Thanks guys,

as for paint, I used automotive paint, base and clear. I shot it with a mini HVLP gun using 2 gallon compressor.

I left the hinges silver because it is very hard to mask the little power display on the right hinge, and I also though that it would add to detail since the touchpad is silver and I didn't want it to stick out.

Using two colors is a bit too hard, but it can be done. I'm thinking about doing yellow-black, mostly yellow with black stripes instead of white.

Do you think it would look better with white stripes or the complete paint like the one you are looking at today???
Whatever you do, don't mix orange/copper w/ blue. Ugh. Made me sick to watch all the Denver/Seattle games when Seattle used to be in the AFC West Couldn't stand the orange/blue mix. Have never figured out how anyone could cope w/ that. But hey- if it floats your boat or you find someone that wants to buy it w/ that color, all the more power to ya

Was it hard to take everything apart? And how many layers did you do? Clearcoat?

Be interesting to do something like this. I've never really torn a laptop apart (other than opening my 8790 up in order to clean the guts). I've got an old Sony that I could practice on. Seeing things like this makes me want to give it a whirl

no, no, no... I wasn't going to mix blue and orange. I was going to do either blue with white, or orange with white.

As coats, it has primer, sealer, base coat and three coats of clear.

Taking the latop appart is not very hard. Hard part is prep work (cleaning, sending, masking) and finishing work (sending clearcoat, and buffing).

Shooting paint is not hard at all, it does take practice. This is only my second laptop that I have done, the other you can look at Emachines forum, it's red and has Quake III logo on it.

I'm in KY man. Viper Blue/White has been on my mind for a while. Next 9300 I buy is going to be it most likely.

Supplies?

Where is a good place to buy paint for this kind of job online?

well, I'm not sure if you can get the paint online. It's always best to look at the samples in the store.

check out Carquest... or just look for automotive paint in the yellow book. They should have the books with all kinds of samples. you can have them premix the paint so it's ready to shoot right out of spray gun.

hope this helps.

I am really impressed. NICE WORK!!!

I`ve done some paint jobs too but all i did was XBOX and PS2 modding. Now i really want to go into this here too.

I just don`t know where i could get a second plastic cover for my Lappy. Here in germany Dell really sux if you want to buy parts of theyr products. If it is not damaged, you won`t get another spare part. Can u guys gimme a hint where i could get these stuff? Even if its in USA i don`t care. If they sent it to Europe i`ll be fine.

Greetz!

Ok, wait. You said that you just masked it off? You didn't disassemble the laptop? Or did I misread that? I painted my i9300, and I totally took it apart, including the little power LED panel on the hinge that you were talking about. Superglue'd back together, and working fine. I have no experience with actual paint guns, so I used spray paint and clearcoat. It looks about as nice as yours, but it isn't holding up extremely well. I have it wrapped in a T-shirt to reduce the wear on the paint, but I have to wax it all the time...
