I did take it appart. I couldn't figure out how to take out those little power indicators, so I masked that off.
About spray paint... hmm... see, curing of spray paint takes 5 months. It's a big mistake to wax the laptop! With auto clear, you can wax after a month, with spray paint, god knows when.... 6 months or so . The reason is if you wax it soon, wax locks in the activator and other chemicals. The chemical evaporates through time and what supposadly happens if you wax too early, is clear coat starts peeling and chipping of.

Anyway, I hope that was of help. My lappy is on ebay now, looking forward to do another paint job after this one is done. I'll probably go Viper GTS blue with white trimm and white Viper decal in the middle.

Yeah, I left it alone for 2 months before I waxed it. I could no longer smell it, so I hoped it had been long enough, but it was getting kind of beat up; especially the palm rest area. If I ever do it again, it'll just be the lid I think. Or else I'll take it apart and take it to a professional autobody shop. I wasnt very impressed with the spray cans.

Were you using lacquer cans or enamel? Enamel takes forever to properly cure, but lacquer should fully cure in a month or so if you leave plenty of time for the chemicals to evaporate out inbetween, like letting it sit for a week after wet coats.

Also, why were you painting something you were selling?
ITS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!

Why did I paint something I was going to sell? hmmm.. it was an experiment. I really want to paint cars, so I started from something little - laptops

I didn't take me too long to do it, plus it will make someone really happy. I'll just go and buy another one and do a different paintjob, and of course post it here for you fellas to see.

I'd like to do my own body work (we repair all kinds of stuff, currently in the works: 1949 Austin A40 Devon, 1966 Mustang, 2005 F150, and a few others on the back burner), but painting is just way too hazardous to your health for me to get into. You'll never meet an elderly painter... Way too many chemicals.

nah man, you can use all kind of bad ass masks and stuff.
Yeah, but 30 years of chemicals will kill you, 30 years of putting on masks and taking off masks and gloves and protective neckwear and full-coverage clothes on hot days and stuffy air all the time and smelling like paint when you get home, etc etc. Either option turns me off. Good luck with it though.

Nice... What would you charge to paint a Gen 1 XPS?

OOHHH, PRETTY. Nice color of choice for the laptop, it really shines in the sun.
