Two Questions about Dell 8600?

Hi There,

1) Regarding RAM. I was thinking of buying more than 512MB,333MHz 2 DIMM, which is a free upgrade. But the next possible choice is 640MB,333MHz,DDR 2 DIMM , which is about $225 more expensive. On the one hand 'Wow' thats a lot of money, on the other hand how should the Dual Channel work this way, if you have a 512MB and a 128 MB in your system?

2) I'm looking more for a bagpack which is convenient to carry around.
There are two different section on the site:
'Carrying Case' and 'Carrying Case (Ships Separately from System)'

The first one has a Backpack Carrying Case for $79
and the second one has several options, but no pictures on them:

Kensington Saddlebag $40
Targus Sport BackPack $60
Targus Rakgear Slam Backpack $44
Pacific Design Action Backpack $36
Kensington Saddlebag Kit w/ComboSaver & PocketMouse $99
Kensington Saddlebag Sport Backpack $55
Kensington SaddleBag Pro $55

What is what and how do they look like?

Before you order more ram from Dell, you might want to check out the prices of ram from other vendors like crucial. I find Dells ram upgrades kinda expensive.

The Dell 8600 doesn't use Dual Channel memory. If you want more RAM, buy the 8600 with its cheapest RAM configuration and then get your additional RAM from Crucial or any other memory supplier. You'll save a nice chunk of $$ that way. As for those cases, you can check'em out at Kensington.com and Targus.com.

Thanks guys. I will check them out.

Whats about the Hitachi 7200 RPS HD. Is it cheaper to buy it somewhere else?

Hard Drives are a different story than upgrading memory. The thing with memory is that you have two slots. Dell will not sell you the laptop without at least one DIMM, so most people order (or should) the second stick from an outside source.

I believe the 8600 only has one hard drive slot, so buying a 7200 after market would require you to dump the 4200 rpm hard drive that comes with the laptop. This makes upgrading the HD from a secondary source cost prohibitive.

Check out newegg.com for RAM. 200 pin pc2700 runs about $90 for 512 mb stick or crucial but its like $120 for 512 mb stick.

Alright guys.

I think I am going to take the Kensington Saddlebag Sport Backpack.
Is it this one? http://www.kensington.com/html/3208.html

And regarding the RAMS. What kind of Rams is compatible with Dell 8600.
PC2100, PC2700 or PC3200 ? And what kind of is recommandable?

I know that the CL=2 is faster than CL=2.5. But whats about Registered or unbuffered? ECC or Non-Parity? Why are PC2700 only in CL=2.5 and PC3200 only in CL=3 available?

Too many questions!

Greetings
Houmi

Edit: ups I missed this description:
http://www.crucial.com/crucial/pvtco...memtype=CHOOSE

But still comments are welcome! And the question what type of RAM Dell 8600 uses is still not answered.

I believe that you can only use the PC2700 on the 8600 I put a 512 stick in mine.. Was Centon PC2700 333DDR and it worked without a hitch and it only cost 100 dollars from circuit city....and yes the dell memory is way overpriced so shop around you'll definately get a better deal.......
SPECS 8600 1.7

Wow look at that:
DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 6ns • 2.5V • 64Meg x 64

http://www.crucial.com/store/PartSpe...64Z335&cat=RAM

Just $76 for 512 MB. Non-parity is faster than ECC, so this would be my choice I think.

umm...you sure that isn't Desktop RAM?
the cheapest I can find 2.5 unbuffered non-parity 2700 DDR for my T41p is $125.00

The ones for Dell 8600 is $125.99 for 512 MB

uppss. You are right. That was the desktop RAM.

But $125.99 is still a good price.

Do someone has a Coupon for Crucial or for Dell 8600 Laptops?

Thanks
Houmi

Coupons are rarely popping up these days. Check ebay and you can get some for like .99 cents.

I just used one when I reordered.
