Clean up?

Hi everyone...

Well i been using a PC for most of my time and I used to clean up my machine alot. I would scan for virus, worms , adware, and etc.. also i would defrag my system. ( just making sure nothing in my machine is wrong )

I was wondering ( after 6 months with my apple) is there a routine which is a bit similar to what I used to do on a PC? Is there a way to scan my computer for any problems? or should i just go on using it and dont worry about such a thing?

If you keep your computer on all night you don't have to do anything save for the occasional permissions repair.

If you do not keep your computer on all night, every couple weeks open the Terminal and do this: sudo /etc/daily .... it'll ask for your password; input it and let it run. When it's finished replace daily with weekly, when that finishes replace weekly with monthly.

I was at the apple store and was going to purchase the norton virus program for the apple but the guy at the apple store told me not to get it cause its worthless.

What you ran were Unix maintenance scripts. They clean out cache files and logs. When these aren't cleaned out on a regular basis they can get big, and the bigger they get the more memory and processor power it takes to load them and use them.

Norton for OS X is crap. You don't need an antivirus programme for OS X now. Maybe a few years down the road, but currently there are no known viruses for OS X.

MacJanitor is a GUI version of the command line. It can help assist if you forget where/how to run the manual process.

I use Onyx and Maintenance 3.2. Onyx is pretty much like MacJanitor, and Maintenance is an Automator program that repairs permissions and cleans caches. Prolly only need one, but I run each every few days just to stay on top of things (and because I'm used to having to scan/clean my PC every 2 days). Oh yeah, both are free too.
