not bad with the 3 year warranty. wiith upgrades from a gig of ram ) a 6800 ultra from an x300 and a 1.6ghz -> 2.13 from a 1.7ghz i am 100 dolalrs higher than that price. I say it is a pretty good deal seeing as it is not even released yet and i have a 1 year warranty.

(i discovered this site to late, could have gotten this laptopa little cheaper) (thought i was a dell guru just knowing about the coupons)

"should I get 9400 with 47% discount?"

Certainly not! Why would you do that? Demand that you pay full price, Nancy!

Sorry, was that a real question?

if u want it for gaming, remember its an underclocked 7800 which is supposedly 40% slower then the 7800gtx in the xps2/m170. review here:

I am hopping I can overclock it at least, or maybe sell the card on ebay and get a real GTX card.

If Dell does the same kind of coupons this year as they did last year, you should be able to pick up an XPS with similar specs for close to the same money. Does anyone know if they're still dropping those nice, fat coupons every now and then? I haven't paid any attention since I got my system.

Actually it's not an underclocked 7800, as it is, well, a Geforce Go 7800, just not a GTX.
Also realize you're taking a risk going the "I'll just upgrade" route. No one's posted a picture of the 9400's innards yet - we have no clue if Dell made it so you can't install the 7800GTX.

They very well might have.

For that price, I would get that system as it is. You can probably overclock the 7800 anyway.

'In addition, the system did not show as powerful gaming performance as the game-centric Dell XPS M170 single-core system. Even though both systems have the same graphics chipset, the E1705's graphics power is substantially lower, as it actually operates at a lower GPU clock rate to conserve the battery. Its 3DMark 2005 and Splinter Cell gaming scores were about 40 percent lower than those of the M170. (We were a little surprised that Dell did not announce dual-core components on the XPS notebook line, a performance brand.)'

so does that mean it won't play games like DOOM or Half-Life properly? I want the dual core and the Napa platform, but I also want to be able to play decent games for the next 4 or 4 years...

how hard is it to over-clock it?

thanks

Why not?

"We did some on-site testing of the graphics card, discovering that the default 3D clocks of the card are 250MHz GPU and 658MHz GDDR speeds. Based on the GDDR speeds, we can surmise that the 7800 Go uses the same RAM as the older 6800 Go. We also overclocked the card using Coolbits, using the “Detect Optimal Settings” option. The card easily achieved 349MHz GPU and 853MHz GDDR speeds. That’s an amazing 40% increase in core speed and 30% increase in memory speed. Remember that the auto-overclocking function in Coolbits is quite conservative so higher clocks should easily be possible. The 7800 Go is rated at 35W TDP at stock settings, up from 32W. The 7800GTX Go is rated at 68W TDP."

Ripped from a post over at Laptop Logic on the 7800 Go card, so apparantly it has a fair amount of overclock headroom.

and are you going to bitch about the inferior lcd and return the computer after you get it?
Heh, inferior LCD seems to be a theme with Dell. 47% off or not, it is still your money. If they send you crap, you have every right to bitch about it. I'm on my third 9300 right now due to "inferior" LCDs and this one has light leakage worse than any I have ever seen on a laptop. I am not even close to happy with it but I need a laptop and I have already sold my Sager.

If I could get my hands on a 47% off package, I would return mine and order the 9400 myself. Run with it.
