That's correct, from the picture the form factor is unfortunately totally different

Not only that there is only one fan in the i6000.... putting such a powerful GPU would overheat within a few mins.

The GPU overheats at stock as well. That's what undervolting and underclocking is for

Too bad. Anyone know of any other laptops that use the same form factor for gfx card?

The D810 does I believe - Mr K6 put a 6800 from a 9300 in there.

Well its the same connector from what i can see. now someone just needs to try it out! and not just assume. its an expensive test, but you can sell the card after if no luck
post #27 of 62
Nice article. Now, if Dell just keeps selling those 7800GTX's cheap...

7800 in a 8600 would be key, sorry i don't have any pics of the insides but i'll try and find some

Isnt it an AGP system? forgive me if its not, just guessing
post #30 of 62
eh, just googled AGP to figure out what it meant, but yeah i would think it is. I have the ATI 9600 pro turbo and i believe this laptop also came with like 2 other cards available

HOLY CRAP! Fantastic . I guess this answers the questions from the other thread about putting a 7800GTX in . So you ended up using the dinky little heatsink from the M70 (pics?)? How were temps? I know that the 6800Go I put in the D810 got up to 70C during load, what was the GTX peak at? Great job though, really well done .

There's no way the 7800GTX could go in there, or any other PCI-E card even ignoring the fact they're not the right shape. The other cards the 8600 came with were the Geforce FX 5650, FX5200 and I believe the Volari V3 or something. The older GF4 Ti4200 from the 8500 would probably fit in there as well but the 9600 pro turbo was the fastest of them.

I've just installed a 7800 GTX on my D810 and while it works, it overheats...

Idle temperature is much like my Quadro (63ºC) but on load it goes so high that the computer shuts down.

Any suggestions?

Also, core throtling is set to 115ºC, wich is too high in my opinion... I tried to change it, but Nibitor seems to have no effect over it.

------------------

By the way, this is my current setup:

3D HIGH: 275/1060
3D LOW: 175/650
2D: 100/650

All at 1.0v.

I used the Quadro heatsink and it seems that it is making good contact. However, I have no real way to tell.

Is there a way to upgrade the AC Power adapter that comes w/ the M70? I know it comes with a 90w power adapter....... could you just plug in say a 150W? XD
post #36 of 62
Having looked at the both the d810 and the m70 i think both have very similar if not idential cooling etc. so i'm a bit suprized that the 7800gtx overheated when you put it into the laptop.

By any chance did you try the cooling improvement offered in other threads such as using the copper plate along with AS5 as transfer material for the ram and core instead of teh stock dell cooling options?

7800GTX Go inserted into a Dell Precision M70, by yours truly

Battery life is virtually identical, after modding.
Nice job dude! + rep!

It's definetly sucking juice like crazy. I did a test a few minutes ago:

I have two nearly identical laptops: a D810 and an M70. Both of them consume about 31W on these conditions:

Idling
Screen at full brightness
CPU set in low power mode (800 MHz)
PowerMizer set in maximum battery

Launching Ati Tool, however, gives me very diffent results:

On the Quadro (6800) it consumes 44W peak set on 'maximum performance'.

On the 7800 it consumes 41W on 'maximum battery', 56W on 'balanced' and I could not test 'maximum performance' because of the driver, but it must be disturbing. To me, it seems that something is not right about this mod...

Wow $300 is a great price. Here in Australia Dell sell the M70 for $3000 ($US 2250).

hmm, i'm looking at putting the 6800 ultra in because the 7800s are just going for crazy prices now. Those watt usage vaues do seem very high though.

Is the unit still overheating as well?
