Ah, because I bought the graphics card for xmas for modding. I then spent a while writing the article.

See, if people "donated" stuff to me, or if I wasn't a poor student, then this article would have come out faster

Working on it (not with a 150W though, since that would be rather pointless as heat would be the limiting factor)

Screen at full brightness
CPU set in low power mode (800 MHz)
PowerMizer set in maximum battery

Launching Ati Tool, however, gives me very diffent results:

On the Quadro (6800) it consumes 44W peak set on 'maximum performance'.

On the 7800 it consumes 41W on 'maximum battery', 56W on 'balanced' and I could not test 'maximum performance' because of the driver, but it must be disturbing. To me, it seems that something is not right about this mod...
Don't use ATI Tool. Use Mobile Meter.

I would give those screws a few good turns, as well as download i9kfangui to force "max fan" when gaming.

By any chance did you try the cooling improvement offered in other threads such as using the copper plate along with AS5 as transfer material for the ram and core instead of teh stock dell cooling options?

If you can link me to a place to obtain these copper pieces for cheap (or a person who can donate some to a good cause ), then I will most definately check it out

(sorry for the quad post btw LOL)

I already use i9kfangui. It reports the temperature 6 degrees lower than what the driver says by the way. To measure the power consumption, I use notebook hardware control. Ati Tool and Fillrate Tester are just to put stress on the video card.

The problem remains: it draws too much power. I don't know what you did, but if it gets over the 44W limit, it's going to overheat no matter what. In a chip all the power consumption goes as heat.

I've tried putting a copper plate with thermal paste and it didn't help.

I will probably give up with the mod if I do not see satisfactory results soon. Stability is a great concern.

That's rather unusual.

I'm clocking definately over 44W in 3D. That's 100% normal.

any updates on this? Did you guys get your heat issues under control?? =]

I'd be very weary of this. No way you could get those specs for under $700. Hell I'd be surprised if you got it under $1000 for those specs.

How is this even possible---doesn't the BIOS have to support compatible graphics cards before it can work in a laptop such as the one you tried it in? Was it a hacked BIOS or what?
No need any Bios modification, do you need bios modification to put a new video card on your desktop? No, same on lap. I have installed 7800 gtx on my Latitude D810, recognised without any problem. The problem is the heat produced
post #51 of 62
so you're saying I can put an x1400 in my 6000 and have it work fully?
I'm going to take a look at that in the next couple of days. While I have both the I6000D and the E1505 here I'm going to see if the x1400 will fit in the I6000D, just for kicks. I figure it'll help some people out that might want to upgrade, especially since the x1400 so far seems like a good bit better than the x300.

Same problem here. Never solved it. What did you with it?

Definately no guarantee of that.

With one of Dell's previous laptops you had to reflash the BIOS with the BIOS of one of Dell's other laptops (which was essentially the same) to get the new GPU to recognise. It might have been the D800 with the M60 BIOS (I know that enabled 333Mhz RAM) but I just can't remember. So many models ago!

In my precedent laptop (D800) I've installed the Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo and it works with both Bios of D800 and Precision M60 (I prefer the last one for DDR333 support). It works with no problem to 392/298 (core/mem) max 85C and 58C in 2D

It kind of makes you wonder what is going through the heads of the Dell designers when they make a business laptop that has 333Mhz RAM capability but decide "hmmm, lets make it run at just 266Mhz instead."

I set core/mem at 330/1080 at 1,1V , max temp 100C in FEAR (1024x768) and I9kfanGUI (nvidia monitor reveal 7 more degrees). With other games reaches lower temps, but in 2D temps is costantly at 64C.
I would try to set 2D voltage to 1V but I don't know how make this with nbitor, I can choose only between 1,1 and 1,3.
So REAL temps are 64/100 or 71/107?

What about the heatsink? Which one did you used?

I can help you to mod the BIOS if you wish.
