BT's BIG Gentoo Project. - Page 6

OK, this one is killing me!!!

How the heck do I load kernel modules labled [M] (in the kernel menuconfig) automatically? In ubuntu I think you just edit the modules file and simply type the module name. I have so many critical modules (2nd sound card, pvr250) that are not being loaded at boot time. Of course a 'modprobe' works, but it's not permanent and I think it's not sufficient in getting these things working as they should. I think these modules have to be loaded at boot time to work, at least that's my hypothesis.

BTW, seablade, the instructions you gave on compiling the genkernel (genkernel --menuconfig --bootloader=grub all) works beautifully. I was finally able to get the kernel compiled with gcc-3.4.4 and FINALLY got vmware installed!

Well for modules you want loaded at boot time, add them to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

Or Kernel-2.4 if you are for whatever reason using that, I doubt you are.

However for your sound it is probably better to use alsa-conf to set it up. NOTE that I have only once had alsaconf work correctly, the rest of the time when I select the card to configure it asks me if I want to sety up snd_error(Blah Blah Blah). I actually tell it to go ahead and set it up, then go through and edit the modules.conf, modprobe.conf, and modules.d/alsa files and replace the snd_error with snd_hdsp or whatever your card is. Note there should be NOTHING after the module on any of those lines. To test it out run the init script and see if you get errors, and see if the module is loaded.

Seablade, can you post your modules.d/alsa? alsa-conf will not detect my usb2 sound card so I have manually input it and I'm not sure of some settings.

Ah, looks exactly like mine. I thought you had two cards setup. How do you set the mixer, dsp and midi to work with a second card?
Heh I am wondering if I shouldnt stick my other card back in, I just dont have a huge need to at the moment.

In as far as getting both of them to work at the same time, I could only tell you to go to the ALSA docs at the moment as I havent done it myself, sorry. I would think it is just a matter of setting up snd-card-1 as your second card, but since yours is a hotplug card, I am not so sure how to do it with that.

It's worth noting here that if you run coldplug at bootup it could load the soundcard modules for the second card anyway. I find it's best to specify both cards if you've got two installed to avoid any potential mishaps. I never use the conf tool myself, tend to just edit the conf file manually then run update-modules. Here's the basic one, just edit it for your card(s) putting the primary card as card 0.

Heh thats funny, I always run the conf tool at least once to get the basic layout, and go in and edit it by hand after that to get it working

This is going to be the last update for a little while so I can concentrate on getting some long standing issues fixed.

[095%] Network Configuration- Network monitoring services are causing sever performance issues in gnome. (still unresolved)
[100%] X.org and Gnome- Gnome appears to be functioning 100%.
[100%] ALSA- working.
[100%] Video Drivers- working.
[060%] MythTV- kernel modules loaded. Backend and front end up, pvr-250 device not recognized yet.
[000%] Mame- Need xbox drivers working.
[050%] US-122- Getting this usb sound device working. Kernel module compiled, having issues with alsa config and loading kernel modules on boot.
[100%] Configure Grub to boot my windows drive.
[085%] Multimedia- Got most everything working. Need to get dvd playback more reliable. Also need to find a way to get ms 32bit codecs working.
[050%] MySql, Apache, Tomcat, Php, Java JDK- Mysql 100%, Apache 100%, java 50% (need to run ibm java and sun).
[050%] Desktop Enhancements- Gdesklets having compiling issues, need to install conky, need to get network monitors stable. un-antialiased ms fonts work.
[100%] E17- working 100%.
[070%] Jack & Ardour- Both work with my nvidia audio. Need to get it working with my us-122 usb audio.
[040%] Automounting- HAL is broken (my fault). Having issues with incompatible software.
[000%] Maya- Haven't started.
[000%] Cedega and other 32bit binary packages- Haven't started.

As you can see, I'd being pretty ambitious with what I want to accomplish with this machine.

Thanks, I missed this post. I'll give it a shot.

Hmm you have a 64 bit machine right BT? In that case for the ms32codecs and the like make sure you have the linux-emul ebuilds installed.

Have a bit of a vested interest in all this since my z71v is really beginning to pee me off so I'm considering getting ahold of a 9750 myself. I like to do lots of crazy CPU intensive stuff that grinds the z71v to a halt and the 6600go GFX card is a bit pedestrian. Keep up the good work BT .

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't even attempted to get 32bit stuff working yet.

Thanks.

Here's my roadmap:

1- Get Gentoo stable and 100% functional on my Desktop for normal tasks. [completed]
2- Get Gentoo installed and 100% functional on my Dual Opteron server. Need to have Mysql, Java, Tomcat and apache working plus my Java webapp. I also need to get my 3ware sata raid controller working. [just started the install today]
3- Get Gentoo stable and 100% functional on my Laptop for normal tasks. [haven't started]
4- Get Gentoo Desktop Install as a fully functioning media center (MythTV) [partially completed]
5- Complete laptop install- Get ardour working with my us-122 usb audio. Get all the bells and whistles going. [haven't started]

So I have a ton of work ahead. I'm basically changing all of my ubuntu installs to gentoo. I think in the long run it will be a huge benefit.

I'm just kinda using this thread as a blog covering my gentoo quest. Hopefully no one objects.

Seablade or anyone else that can help,

What's the command to compile the kernel and have it automatically move it to boot? I know seablade posted it in another thread but I can't find it. I need to recompile the gen kernel to support smp.

Thanks,
-BT

EDIT:
I found it...
genkernel --menuconfig --bootloader=grub all

Yea that...

Whew, after a 20 hour work day I got Gentoo running really well on my opteron server. Of course I had to work through numerous grub issues, but the one that killed me was getting gnome to compile.

Finally got that sorted out this morning after only 3 hours sleep. Some advise... Make sure the date and time are correctly set in the bios- if you have the clock set to local, setting the time only in Gentoo isn't enough.

The best news is that I finally got my 3ware SATA2 controller working!!! I can finally see a 1.5TB raid5 ext3 partition!!! No network problems on this install and just recompiled the kernel with smp support. Life is good!

Now I have to install apache/mysql/java/tomcat/webapp, ssh, vnc and read up on securing things. Because mysqlcc is mostly dead I need to also find an alterative. After 4 months of struggling with this beast of a machine I may finally be close to finished.

I may get to installing gentoo on my laptop sooner than I thought...

I believe the successor to mysqlcc is this? http://www.mysql.com/products/tools/administrator/. I only have a piddly little SQL database so I tend to use phpmyadmin.

Which is correct, but makes no sense being that the two programs complement eachother well. You can't edit databases/tables or run queries in mysqladmin.

I just discovered something about mysqlcc tonight. To get it to work with the newer versions of mysql you need to use mysqlcc 0.9.4. The google links mostly refer to v. 0.9.2.

Here's a link to download the latest version:
