9300 Palmrest Cleaner - Page 2

Check out the nasty wear marks on my XPS in this picture:

I just took a little rubbing alcohol and a t-shirt and cleaned all that off. I gave it a pretty good scrubbing while making sure it wasn't just taking the paint off, but I found that the "wear marks" were just a bunch of goop rubbed into the paint from my grubby mitts. It looks almost new again.

Your mileage may vary.

EDIT: Do go easy on it if you try this, as I'm sure alcohol isn't the best thing in the world for the paint.

Has anyone tried waxing the palrest with car wax to protect it?

waer on both sides of the palmrest? you must type a lot Doc. i play on getting a new keyboard because typing papers on the 9300 isnt very comfortable.

Yep, both sides, baby. I use my computer for more than just games as it's my only computer.

I had an external keyboard for a while, but have gotten used to the laptop keyboard and less cluttered workspace. I get all wonky on full size keyboards now. You get used to either over time.

I've used my 9300 for many hours a day since April and no wear what so ever! Being unaware of the potentially cheap paint, I've even cleaned it with rubbing alchohol (kill all the bacteria) or vinegar...and nothing!

No luck with me. Mine started turning black three weeks after I got it, So I laid a bunch of Scotch tape over where I rest my hand on the keyboard while playing FPS games

So, nobody knows how much a replacement palm rest for the 9300 costs?
Looks like $5, plus $10 for shipping will get you a new one.

I've ordered spare Dell parts from these guys before.

I just openly lie to dell and tell them my touchpad doesn't work, and they mail me a new one through airborne express the very next day, everytime I feel it's getting dirty, lol.

A complete palmrest for free? Or was that a joke?
I have a dell complete warantee thing, so they just send the parts over, but I mean it's not technically free because I paid like 150 dollars extra for the warranty to begin with, but I might as well use it right? I mean for the most part nothing is ever really going to happen to my internal parts, it's really all cosmetics. Dell is still makin money off of me.

hmm... interesting thought. i'll have to try that tomorrow and let you know how it goes..

I would guess it costs the same as an XPS part, whcih I just checked on a few days ago. It was around $75 or so because the touchpad is built in.

So how come the ones on ebay are 5 bucks? They look as if they have the touchpad too. I know buying from dell = buying over price, still this seems too much a difference, even for them.
I'm sure i'm missing something.

No idea. Certainly tempting to put the eBay deal into the "If it's too god to be true..." file.

I am brutal with my laptop... I have even dropped it on concrete and busted the corrner off of my laptop.... (ouch DINO DAMAGE) but that was a result of my own stupidity... I clean my palm rest with goof-off and nothing fades or wears off... not to mention I'm probbably on this thing 12+ hours a day and I always have oily/greasy hands...

the only thing on my laptop that has faded it the "designed for windowsXP" sticker

I didn't even have to lie. I just told them the paint was wearing off and they sent me a new one. I think the replacement one is starting to wear off too, haha. Anyway, I'm thinking of doing a custom paint job.

Man, don't put this on me! I used some odd brand here in Brazil. I can't read the language. I think it's around 93%. It smells weird here though.

Do use a soft, non-abrasive cloth just to be safe. I used an old t-shirt.

I lay my cordless keyboard on top of my 9300-keyboard,and it works great, and i can beat the crap out of it and not worry

okay, sorry to report, but now my left palmrest has a white mark on it, after using the rubbing alcohol. i used an old t-shirt and it didn't work.. there's about an half inch diameter of white area where the paint's gone.

anyways, not really upset about it.. will just replace my keyboard assembly in a few months when my touchpad stops working.
