9860 CPU Upgrade Question

Thread Starter
1) Currently, what is the most powerful EM64T processor upgrade for this unit?
2) Would the motherboard on this unit be capable of running a dual core Pentium Extreme Edition 840 Smithfield or Intel Pentium D 950 Presler, if there was a bios revision enabling dual core operation? The specs appear similar to the Intel Pentium 4 670 Prescott as far as LGA 775, 800 FSB, and voltage are concerned, but perhaps the chipset on the 9860 would be the issue?

Thanks.

Bump, as I'm considering this too once I get mine back with the 7800 installed. Anyone have an answer?

The most powerful processor the 9860 can support is the 3.8GHz flavor.

It CANNOT run Dual Core Pentums. I dont think the sockets are even compatable.

the socets are the same but you cant run duals on the 915 chipset, only 945/955/975

You will get much more of a performance increase if you upgrade the memory or hard drive.

May I ask why you want to upgrade the CPU? What do you have in there now?

I'm currently running a 3.6 Ghz Pentium 660, with 2 gig stock memory and another 2 gig OCZ.

I'm an avid chess player, and many of the programs that I run are searching through numerous databases with millions of games and analyzing positions around the clock, especially when I'm playing in tournaments. Many of the analysis engines I use can utilize up to 8 processors, so it would have been nice to have dual core capability...with hyperthreading! BUT...as I suspected, it appears that it is the 9860 chipset that will hinder any cpu upgrades beyond the Pentium 670.

Or am I mistaken?

true, also the 4gb memory dont do much for you since the 9860 only sees 2.8 max.
