System Performance

Hey, laptop tends to run like crap every now and then. Earlier today SYSTEM(not system idle process) was using 80% of CPU. Also, since i rarely ever use battery power, i want my cpu to run at max speed all the time. I have disabled the speed step process in bios but cpu still does not run at full power all the time. I scan for viruses daily and adaware/spyware is a daily scan as well. I use power Defrager every day too. Plus, random programs will use 99% of cpu too. Main ones i notice a lot are winamp, firefox, aim, msn(sometimes) and once in a blue moon, outlook. Any clues as to what could possible cause the system to run slow?

Hmmmm...AIM an'/or MSN could've slipped something in that's doing it...my first reccomandation<<Which you should do every once in a while anyways>> backup your data, swipe your drive, an' start anew. Get gaim instead of the others though<<Sourceforge.net>> much better program, an' you can open all you other accounts at once.
Or, alternatively, you could list every program you've got installed, every process your computer is running, etc, an' we could try to actually diagnose this problem, but that's just annoying.

anyone got any idea's for me to try? Tired of dealing with this. some more details is msn using under 250kb and using 80% of cpu for over a good 3 minutes or so. I know that is not normal. I'm willing to do most anything to figure out this problem.

Could it be bad RAM? Sometimes RAM sticks go bad (I had that happen awhile ago) and will make the system lag.

any way to test for bad ram? Only ram tests i know are booting the machine up with one stick of ram at a time and also ram benchmarking

It could be your anti-virus program too. Symantec is known to take over at times... It's a long shot. Just tryin to help
