Acer Aspire AS5672wlmi PCM05

I am a Compusa sales rep and I bench all of our computers that are worth benching that come in stock. I have put PCM05 on all of our dual core systems and all of our athlon and P4 w/HT systems. The fastest desktop in the store benches at 3456 and its a HP with a 4200+ X2 in it with 1gb of ram and a sata drive. I benched this Acer to a 3160 on PCM05!! I am amazed. The next fastest laptop in that bench was a HP P4 640 with 1GB of ram and a 128meg x600. My desktop is a highly overclocked pentium m and it musters a 4470. Needless to say... I will have one at cost on friday... muuuhahaha. I will have 3D05 benches for you then also.

I promised 3DMark05 numbers: 1654

So its not a bonafide gaming machine but it will work for engineering school Unreal and Soldier of Fortune II.

Thanx for the bench's. I'm scouring for as much info as I can before i decide which laptop i buy.
Anyway, I was also wondering if you have any other graphics benchs either than just 3dmark? Something like actual game framerates in a recent game ie. Quake4.
Yeap, this is one of the laptops on my list- would be nice to see some average fps on some of the popular games out there. Too bad all the CompUSAs around do not have this, but there's still online

Thx for the 3Dmark05 score.

Fan noise

Hi, Does the fan run all the time like the Ferarri 4000? I really didn't like that.

Thanks for info.

For some results of a game. I play Quake 4 at 1280X800 on medium detail at averaging around 25-30 fps. It plays decent at that level.

Saltonx.... fans don't run all the time. When they do they only tipoff is the airflow. You CANNOT hear the fan unless you put your ear to the port.

Ordered mine today, anything i should know about this laptop? (ie specifics on things that might break, a co worker was talking about a usb power problem with the Duo's)

The power problem has supposedly been fixed. It was also on the 8000 series travelmate. The 5672 has been perfect! I run a cruiser ti 512mb and it is probably the most finicky(sp) about power of all of the flash drives and it is perfect in all slots along with powering my 60gb ipod video...

I love it FWIW

eighballrj: Do you have the latest 5.9 or whatever drivers installed on the lappy or just the refereance drivers that come with WindowsXP? Reguarding that 3dmark05 bench.

p.s. eightballrj, the power problem has a fix released for it, you still have to download it and install it. Even if your not using any USB2.0 devices the camera uses usb and supposedly causes this bug. There is a link for the fix under i thread I started, after you download it you should post some results as im interested in a core duo acer.

Im glad you say the power problems are fixed im getting that exact computer today. What kind of battery life are you getting for using word or just small applicaitons (IE, word...)

Thanks

how does this laptop run bf2?
Got mine @ CompUSA last Sat. Loaded my software and was hard at it enjoying my to laptop. Sunday I open adobe premiere pro 1.5 and got the blue screen of death. Tried to open premiere 2 more times with the same result. Message said I had a driver conflict. Restored to out of box point and reloaded premiere. Same result. emailed acer, got a reply that it is a software problem and not acers. Called adobe and was told that premiere has an issue with the realtek hd sound card. Down loaded the new driver with the same result. Called realtek and all their support is by email. Emailed them, but no reply yet. I like the acer but got to run premiere. Anyone have any thoughts

Thanks

Ive had this notebook for less than a week and I decided to see how F.E.A.R. demo would run. The program auto-recognized the lowest resolution available. But, the good news is that I got 30 FPS in-game using FRAPS. Every once in a while it would dip below 30, but at 800x600 resolution with no FSAA it ran just fine mostly at 30 FPS, just under in complicated areas, and around 40-60 in less detailed areas. What does this mean? To me, it means I'll be able to run most games at playable frame rates. It also means FEAR is unplayable at higher settings, but if you can live with medium settings and a lower resolution, you're golden. I personally am not a huge fan or running at less than 1024X768 res. I have the 2GB RAM model.

This weekend I play to see how EQ2 will run. That should be interesting. I actually own that one, so I'm really hoping I can run at medium settings. Hopeful thinking, I am well aware!

Jefrey,

Have you changed any settings on your new 5672? I just purchased this one too and would like to play some HL2 and COD2. I've heard wiping the hard drive and reinstalling w/o all the Acer software makes it run faster. How much more I would like to know.

From my tests I was able to get about 300 more 3dmarks just from reformatting etc. But, I will admit it was a pain getting everything to work right. Also, I got very unstable results when overclocking the gpu. It is sad, because the oc on the gpu at one point added another 300 or so to 3dmark05.
After using this notebook for a bit, I would deffinitely not reccomend it for any games. The only real benefit of this notebook is the core duo and its size.
I will be adding more to my review plus pictures either today or tomorrow.

As a second machine, this is more than OK for gaming. If you're saying you wouldn't recommend it for a desktop replacement, then I agree. Otherwise, I don't understand the basis of your agrument. If I could play F.E.A.R. on a combination of low and medium settings, then it's definitely capable of gaming. F.E.A.R. is one of the most demanding games out there today. It just depends how much gaming you're going to do and if you're happy with medium settings. HL2 should be fine on medium settings. That's ok for me as a second machine. I wouldn't buy this one for a desktop replacement though.

Also, how did you OC the x1400? I didn't think there was a utility out there yet.
Yeah, that is what I meant. I would not buy this notebook expecting it to be the only gaming machine I own or a dtr. But, it does make a very nice portable.
I was able to overclock the card once. I used some modded drivers and the told the driver to recognize it as a x1600. Then I was able to use ati utility. Then I ran 3dmark05 which got me a very nice score of around 2100 i believe. But, after I restarted I got errors, and it was really unstable so I had to uninstall the drivers and atitool.
Since, I have not been able to get this thing to oc T_T; It just locks up.
