Delay Starting Laptop

Hi,

I have an IBM Thinkpad R31 2656. Whenever I power the laptop up, I hear the fans running but the computer doesn't boot up. I have to wait upto 1 minute before the POST boot information is displayed.

The laptop recognizes the power adapter and battery just fine. And this problems happens if I use the power adapter or the battery. So I know it can't be a power source related issue. And the fact that the fans turn on means the system is getting power.

Also, I have updated the BIOS to the latest version.

Any help for fixing this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I would check your memory, video and keyboard controllers for problems since they are all examined by POST procedures and could be causing a hangup before boot. Since the problem does indeed happen before POST completion it is very likely a hardware issue. Problems occuring after POST are usually but not always software corruption issues. You might try removing the battery from the notebook completely and using only AC to see if the battery circuit is causing you grief. That can happen whether the battery is capable of giving the power to the PC still or not. Hope you have good luck with it and take care.

Hi,

I tried running the laptop without the battery and using the power adapter. Still same problem . It really looks like the laptop motherboard does not get power for a while. Maybe the fans are directly hooked up to the power and not off the mainboard? Or maybe it's just the bios that's getting power after a delay?

Thanks.
