USB2.0 problem..

I have had my 8886 for just over a month now.. and all has been working well. I use a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical USB. Starting 2 days ago, I can be sitting here surfing the web, or the machine can be just idle, and all of a sudden, you hear those familiar tones that sound when you unplug a USB device, and i will notice that the mouse is no longer lit, and it will not work. Sometimes it will keep making the sounds like you plugged a USB device in, and unplugged it .. so you hear the up and down chimes over and over, until you unplug the mouse and plug it back in..

I'm not sure if it's the mouse, or the USB ports that are going haywire... Any help would be appreciated.

I had ordered a Logitech MX500 for my 8887, it arrived the day after my laptop. So in the meantime I was using the first revision of the MS optical explorer mouse. I ran into the same problems as you have. I could never get it to work correctly... did you try getting latest intellipoint (or whatever they call it) software from microsoft? (I never bothered with it, because I was waiting on the new mouse)

I plugged in the logitech mouse, and have not had a problem. It is also such a "smooth" mouse.

It's weird that it ran fine for a month... I have since downloaded the updated drivers for usb, and intel chipset, , and upgraded to SP1a... so far.. it's been running great now.... maybe it was just corrupt drivers..

Seems to be that... i have run all night without a problem. Not sure if it was the SP or just drivers, but it just seemed weird to run a month fine, then start having problems.. So I don't think it was the SP that fixed it.

I had the exact same problem but with a USB version of the MS Sidewinder gamepad. After a while, and I think a re-install of XP, the thing started working fine again.

Cheers.

i really don't feel like reinstalling XP again right now... either way, it should not be happening.. It worked fine for 2 days, then started again. I just had ithappen again... but it only disconnected and reconnected twice before starting again. I don't think it's hardware.. prob software.

Did you try switching USB ports? You usually get a couple of them, so maybe one is acting up. Try changing 'em around.

Cheers.

Actually, the hardware itself can get finicky at times. You never know...

Cheers.
