SagerMeister's m7700 Aurora & Odyssey Backpack Review - Page 5

Agreed. How widespread does this problem seem?

I'm also wondering... how well would the most powerful Opteron perform in the 7700 (MJ-12 series)? I won't be gaming much on the laptop, I'd be working with develompent programs... which would perform faster?

EDIT: This is quite off-topic, but I'll just post it. My Dual 3.4ghz Xeon rig seems to be very, very unstable. It's quite possibly the start-up programs, as my boot-up time is incredibly long, but I'm beginning to believe that Xeon for regular use is not the way to go. Is my hypothesis that Xeon is very unstable when it comes to personal use correct, or is it just my computer? Is AMD's Opteron the same way?

There have been some posts in the Alienware forum about freezes, but not what I'd call a deluge. My recent thinking is that it has something to do with Cool 'n Quiet. So far I haven't had a spurious freeze since I've turned off CnQ almost 200 cpu idle hours ago (100 per core).

Can't answer your Xeon for personal use question. I have two Xeon chips in a server at work running Win 2003 server and it's been pretty decent.

Again, my big thing with the Intel chips inside of laptops is the heat issue. Having owned a laptop P4, I know I was living on the edge. The AMDs are much more laptop friendly in both power consumption and heat. Excess heat can ruin stuff in a hurry, and I'd rather have a healthier design margin there. I'm willing to sacrifice a scant amount of raw computing power for the added safety, and I'm not sure I'm really sacrificing anything given the AMD vs. Intel chip comparisons.

The higherend AMDs run prety hot to, to hot for a laptop imo. Thats why I will stick with slated laptop designed chips.

Sager, check your PM. I may have found just the thing for your freeze problem.

Heh...we have passed into a dimensionless dimension. Well, the dim part is right anyway...LOL.

BTW, hulioni, I've got VMWare up and running on my rig and it works grrrrrreat! I can't believe how seamless it is. I had run an earlier version of it on my old lappy and, while it worked ok, it was pretty hiccuppy. That is no longer the case. So, I've got Win2k3 server running as a virtual machine to do development and testing in isolation, protecting the Aurora's core system from my deadly "experiments"...hahahaha...

What shenanigans have you been up to with your notebook lately?
Not much has changed with mine, I have run some Linux os's on it with VMware, works good. I did have a scare the other day with my backlight turning off on me. Made a back up image with the respawn and haven't had a problem since, lol. Still love the dam thing and run it almost 24/7 for gaming on the go and keeping up with this forum. I need to run a 3DMark06 again since you beat me . Take care of her Sager .

Wow...the backlight took a siesta? That would be scary. Maybe it just wanted a break from the intense gaming sessions.

Well, I'm not banking on my leapfrogging your 3dMark score holding up for too long. I got lucky as I gave the lappy a steroid cocktail b4 my inflated score. Hey, is Yang still posting scores, or has he gotten tired of it? I notice my post is still the last one there and nothing's been updated since...and I worked so hard for that score too...LOL.

I know he has been way busy as of late but think he is still doing it. Might want to send an email his way, that is a very good score considering that we only have the 4800+. I have taken a little break on gaming on it at the moment, lol, till I see if I can reproduce the problem. Fingers crossed.

Just thought I'd chime in and say that I really hate my Aurora now.

The damn thing is so fast that I finish up my work too quickly. There's enough time left over that my wife makes me do housework. What a cruel world.

You had me scared when I started to read that post. Glad she is still a purring along for you sager , even if it does mean the honeydo list is probably getting longer for you.

You guys/and or girls have no idea how much of a releaf it is to have found this forum and see all the good news on the Auroraâ„¢ m7700 System* ~ mostly due to mine being on order and being stuck on stage 4 >_<, but also do to the fact I'm stuck at work with my new laptop on my mind. Started the day off looking for more info on the backpack and finding Sager's AWSOME review and pictures deffinalty answered any and all questions I had.. now I'm even more jidderish then b4 * I also work for FedEx Kinko's so I'm fairly certain I won't have the same issue as Sager :] ~ My drivers know I'll kick there ass's and are on standby for the delivery to rush it here.. bwhahah *

LOL...the thread lives after being in a coma for a few months! Oh well, getting pushed to the back of the pack is inevitable with the timeless march of technological innovation. In other words, freakin' newer and cooler toys are orgasmic, man!!!

Shiftee, glad my review helped calm your nerves a bit. I had a lot of fun writing it and am happy it has served some useful purpose.

Now more good news for you: I'm coming up on 9 months with this machine, and "buyer's remorse" is not a phrase appearing in any dictionary that I own. I'm amazed each and every day I open this beast's lid and power it on. I'm sure eventually this feeling will wear off as I continue to cram my disk drives with crap and Windows does its usual implosions. Even so, to feel like this thing is brand new 9 months after I placed the order is a testament to its superior performance and design margin.

I'm most happy about the excellent heat dissipation. Clevo-based DTR machines have long been known for their heating issues, but I haven't come close to experiencing anything bad that's heat related. Also, the fantasterrific screen remains 100% dead pixel free.

It's rare that a product matches the high expectations originally envisioned in his/her mind before purchasing and using it. I must say that my Aurora has done exactly that and deserves a hall-of-fame stand all its own in the uncrowded pantheon of products that beat all expectations.

Now, tune in next month when I rant about what a piece of crap this thing is...

I actually have a couple questions now . When using the laptop do the 3 lights underneath the screen turn off*is there an option to turn them off* would get somewhat anoying I would asume watching a movie with lights in ur face :]. Is there a Volume control on the actual case and what is the Audio DJ all about :x ~ aaannnnd what are the 8 silver items on the front side... just decoration? oh.. lol and how far does the moniture layback?
sorry no chance them mega bright blue lights stay on unless you switch your devices off that happens to be attached to em e.g. the one on the right is the wifi
post #98 of 124
Doh ~ oh well.. black tape it is.. lol. Thanks for the info :], and did it honestly take from july 17th till aug 10 for urs to be shipped? lol I just got off the phone from an hour long convo with one of the techs.. adjusting mine since they had a problem with some of the parts I'm hopin the production will get started tomarrow*from what he told me*
post #99 of 124
yeah it drove me nuts waiting but they screwed up my order big time and I had some trouble sorting out problems with the price, but in the end I got the puter but I was put on priority so they rushed mine out and screwed up the xp install so i had to set-up it up myself but its better that way i guess. either way you'll love yours to bits the m7700's are monster beasts mine just eats quake 4 on full everything 1900 res on ultra!!!!! nice!!!!

Yeah, like icweiner sez the blue lights are persistent little buggers. I just put a business card in front of them. Black tape will work even better.

The lid will lay back about...what...at a 140 degree angle maybe? It does not lay flat. I don't have a geeky protractor in my pocket at the moment, so I'm guessing.

The 8 buttons on the front deal with cd audio. You can control music playing via cd by using those buttons, including volume, pausing, seeking, etc. This is exactly what the Audio DJ thing is. You can control all that stuff without lifting the lid.

Good luck with the rest of your stages. Staging is a pain in da butt, but it was certinaly worth the wait in my case (about a month from ordering to delivery).
