Search for the name in your local directory.

it doesnt really matter what it is to you does it?

but, its a new 19"lcd and appears a dell desktop.

not actually a laptop, but im concerned someone has stolen some of my info.

the name is not to be found in my complex, or city for that matter

Purely out of interest moody. I would phone UPS and send it back to them, or you may get in trouble for fraudulently signing. If they launch an investigation.

at the very least you cover yourself

this is actually for a friend. she lives in seattle. one day she got home from work, and found a dell on her doorstep. it has her address on it alright, but a different name

right, but im more concerned now that someone may have her info.

cause i know you have to ship to the same address as on a credit card, but change the name, and if ups just leaves a 1000$ computer laying around, im concerned.

Although I don't believe in that karma bs, I do believe in doing the right thing. And the right thing in this case is to call Dell up to 3 times about this issue. If they still don't seem to give a crap, then I would keep it. And it wouldn't be fraud because you DO live at that address. I can have all incoming packages be named for Joe Smoe but it doesn't matter, you live at that address so you have the right to sign for all packages.

Call Dell to check with them the full details. Then maybe if you still suspect you have personal info stolen (identity theft), make a police report as well. But I think you should really call Dell & "bug" them to arrange for the item to be shipped back to them. Oh, do not forget to demand some coupons/vouchers from them for giving you so much trouble as well as being honest too!!!

thats the thing. no one signed for it, it was left.

i have no intention of keeping it. karma comes back at ya.

yes it would be nice to keep, but i want to find out who is paying for it.

i am a moral person, and believe in doing the right thing too

yes demanding coupons for the right thing would be good. she could give them to me to use on a 9400

I agree that you have the right to sign for all the packages sent to your address but if there happens to be some "mix-up" & it is later discovered by Dell, then they may decided to charge that item to your account & you'll have no reason not to pay the bill because by signing for the package, you are giving the indication that you know about the package & accepted it!!! So that may bring you even more trouble in the future...

NO ONE signed for the package.

it was just sitting at my door in an apartment complex one wed. night

very surprised ups would just leave 1000$ sitting somewhere.

Write down the name, number and position of everyone you talk to at Dell or UPS for record keeping.

I'm not surprised though. It seems that UPS has been doing such things to me on all my shipping through them...

That's true. Your friend is tryign to do the right thing in calling Dell, but I'd call them a few times and UPS and if nothing happens, enjoy the new machine after 6 months of trying or so.

UPS probably doesn't care, they have insurance that would pay for any gaff. People transpose apartment numbers all the time but its' wierd it would come addressed to her. It's possible that it might not be a PC...has your friend verified what it really is?

yes i know ups doesnt care or for that matter even dell.

id tell her to keep it, but it needs to be taken care of correctly.

im sure you all understand.

Contact Dell and report that a laptop arrived and is a unsolicited item that you didn't order. They have to pick it up at their own cost. If they fail to do so after xx months the item is yours to do so as you like.

Contact solictor for local legal info.
