M6810 problems.....not turning on.

Ok, over the weekend I let my g/f take my laptop with her on vacation. (from st. louis to denver) She took it as a carry on in my bag.

Anyways, she says she didn't drop it or anything, but since I got it back it hasn't worked.

Yesterday after messing with it for a while it powered on with the a/c adapter. but, whenever i put the battery in it just froze up. (screen went dark, fan kicked on high speed, and the keyboard and touchpad stopped working...but windows was still running)

Later on it seemed to be working fine. It would work either on or off the battery. So i let it run teh battery all the way down till it turned off. Then i charged it up over night. this morning i got it out and (on battery) it got to windows, but froze up again like before. (windows was still running fine...started detecting wireless networks....but the screen went dark and the keyboard stopped working)

I know my g/f let the battery die on vacation and left it dead for a few days. could the battery be shooting craps and somehow shorting out the laptop?

I've left the battery out for a few hours now and have it pluged in with the a/c adapter, but it won't turn on. None of the lights will even come up.

So i'm kinda out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated

This is a guess but it sounds like your AC adapter might be fried. You can check the voltage by probing the bayonet with a volt meter. It should be around 14-16 volts.

I'd hope that its the a/c adapter, but it was freezing up on battery.

If it won't come on with the AC adapter then it's the AC adapter or motherboard solder joint. This would keep your battery from charging as well. Does the yellow light come on to charge the battery?

Well last night when it seemed to be working fine for a little bit when i killed the battery and recharged it, it charged fine.
I have the laptop a lot of the way apart right now. I plugged in the ac adapter and the light came on for a second, and then went off. It will do this every now and then.

I am still thinking AC adapter. Now it really sounds like the culprit. Bring it in to BestBuy and have them hook it up to a known good adapter. Watch and be amazed! If it still doesn't work then you know the motherboard is bad.

I tested it with my multimeter and its putting out a solid 18.73v steady. ...i think something is broken inside my laptop.

Try running the laptop just with the batery in. If it works fine then it's your adaptor at fault. These adapters are kind of crappy. My adaptor wire broke right where you plug it in the laptop. Cut the rubber and soldered the wire back. *the solder didn't last long (it was a temporary fix). The point is that w/e the wire came lose and then made contact the laptop would just freeze.

Hope this helps.

Its not the battery. Its gotta be something where the motherboard gets power. Its sparatically shows its getting power with the adapter plugged.

Sounds like a bad solder job on the socket to the board. Another person here has the same problem. PLug in the adapter and keep an eye on the blue led which lights up on the front next to the touchpad buttons (it looks like a plug icon). If it flickers off and on when you move the plug in it's socket then that is the problem.

I've got it partially apart, do you know of any guides to take it fully apart?

I don't think anyone here has a tutorial on how to take out the motherboard. I have taken mine out once to vacuum out the bottom inside of the case. Before you go too far I would test my previous assumption by checking the blue AC light is flickering off and on when the unit is connected to AC. Is it?

Yeah, the blue light below the touchpad comes on sometimes when its plugged in. Like i can plug it in, and it will come on, unplug it and plug it back in and it won't come on. And it takes another 5 trys before it will come back on again.

When you plug it in you should hear and feel a click. If not press it in a little harder.
Remove the battery and keep plugging/unplugging the ac adapter until you get a steady power plug light. When it is steady try to get it to crash. Does it?

sounds like a loose connection on the power inverter/ power management board. i deal with those every now and then.
