hahahahahaha

I am amazed at how many people use AOL simply because they think they are getting something special... AOL doesn't own an ISP as far as I'm concerned... to own an Broadband "ISP" you actually have to have some type of network infrastructure...

AOL does not have "Exclusive content" at all, nothing you can't get elsewhere and if they do, it's not even worth it.

AOL does NOT have their own browser

@AOL.com email address immediately writes you off as a noob

Dialup sucks

They dont have broadband as far as I know, you can pay a lot less just by getting service directly from the lines they share.

Virus scan and parental controls.... you are more secure with 3rd party applications.

Here is my Firefox extensions BTW, I dont have a lot, I like it pretty bare..

I am not a noob. My parents use it since they are noobs and I use the e-mail address I can get through them for free. I use AOL Communicator to access my e-mail. Much more advanced then the standard AOL fair.

I don't like web based e-mail like hotmail, yahoo etc.

Gmail and some other free web mail services have free POP3/SMTP.

Also, if you buy a domain name you can have what_ever_you_want@what_ever_you_want.com .. It's pretty cheap now to get a full featured host with mail server for just a few bucks a month..

but why get a full featured mail server when you can get aol?

I used to use AOL. Back then I found the app nice to use, although a little resource happy, and occasionally does more than I like. Now that they have their P.O.S. trying to become its own Operating System, I have little patience for their "walled garden" services.

Go FireFox or Opera: Two best IE alternatives on the market.

And since were posting FF extensions:

regarding MSN tech support: although sometimes they could be slow, overall i'd rank their tech support 8 out of 10. Most people i have had to talk to were friendly and helpful, and did what it took to resolve my issues. Why not a 10 then? Somtimes hold times got a little bit long, and some advice like "check your cables" made me feel n00bish.

Best Browser: Firefox
Best ISP: Optimum Online

My opinions.

I like firefox due to the many upgradable features and the extensions and the ability to change it around all you want.

Here are my extensions

Yes yes! Mouse gestures. Couldn't live without it.

Firefox, Opera, or Konqueror for browsers.

On ISP's: What you want in an ISP is a company that will sell you bandwidth and leave you alone. I had Comcast when I lived in Alabama, and my relationship with them was basically: I send you money, you give me bandwidth. The one time I called with an outage report, they said "Yeah, our engineers know about it and they're working on a fix." The DNS servers were a bit spotty for a while, but they were again working on them at the time.

Stay away from MSN, AOL, and the like, especially AOL (which will rewrite stuff on your computer). The best ISP's are the ones without frills, who just sell a connection and not "content".

Don't buy more bandwidth than you need, either. I'm paying $25 a month for 256kbps down/128 kbps up; "lite" services like these are very tolerable unless you snarf large quantities of things from bittorrent or the like.

etropius.... if i wasn't in hoffland, i'd drop a rep bomb on you, that was just fabulous what you wrote.

i love my relationship with comcast: i send you money, you give me bandwidth and a reliable connection

their servers do have down times once in a while (last time it happened was in the summer, my local dhcp server has issues...they fixed it within 5 hours or so)
