I've listed a portable system I put together on ebay. It was an interesting project. Check it out here:

You wont be able to view the auction until 9:15pm est tonight when it starts.

Let me know what you think.

Not in the market, but nice job. Now THAT portable has upgradeable components!

WOW, thats cool.

You should market the idea to some major company or something and get a ton of money. I would buy one if it was a little bit smaller and slicker(and if I was in the market for a new PC)

Thanks for the feedback, I know it's not everyones ideal setup but there is a small market out there for portable desktops (luggables). Those start out at about 5k for something with modern specs. A purpose built case for a luggable starts at about 2000. You get a case 14" lcd, keyboard, and an empty atx case. Laptops are fine most of the time for my work but occasionally you need something with an scsi card or an available ide channel to attach another hard drive, tape drive, etc. Data transfer can be very slow through pcmcia cards. In fact, if you ever plan on using a firewire device make sure you get a laptop with an onboard port. I've seen some numbers that suggest pcmcia firewire cards are around 7 times slower than onboard ports.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback

I see no reason why it shouldn't work.
Keep in mind that
these things are out there too. It's a fairly movable and upgradeable unit, though it doesn't have the builtin monitor or accessories. A friend bought one recently and it seems OK, but it's not my kind of portability.

I thought about going that route (small form factor cube) but I wanted the larger power supply (420 instead of 200 watts) and most of the small form factors have only a couple of bays, not to mention the fact that the cubes don't fit into most standard hard cases.

I have an AW Navigator in small form factor, and the power supply really sucks. The system is great most of the time, but the thing tends to shut itself down once every two months and you have to open it and move the pin cover to get it to boot. Pain when it happens. I can't imagine gaming on it though.
