the instruction at 0x7730a96e referenced memory at 0x00000000.
The memory could not be written.
Click OK to terminate the program
Click on Cancel to debug the program

The above is an error I'm getting almost every time I boot up. I have to cold shut down and start again. Sometimes get this error 3-5 times in a row. Then the computer will boot up.

I've run 4 different antivirus programs and all the anti-spyware programs I can find - no bugs.

The error dialog box title says it's a svchost.exe problem.

Any ideas folks?

Have you tried inserting your XP disc and doing a repair on your installation?

yup ... twice.

I ended up spending whole day yesterday doing a clean install of windows xp.

SH*T.

This time, I'm using Acronis disk imaging software to do a complete disk image of my now freshly installed setup w/ programs (by the way, the problem was cured with a fresh install after formatting).

With a complete image, if I have problems again, at least i can restore the fresh image and just restore data from backups.

smells like a memory stick issue

pull the ram sticks and boot up with ONE and see if the laptp runs.

repeat for the next stick

if it craps out on one of the sticks then you have found the dead one, but be prepared for both to be dead....

48 hours since reinstall of XP ... no problems

So far no problems.

And remember, I ran that mem86 program for about 10 hours to intensively test RAM (no errors).

Windows XP however better than Windows 2000 and Windows 98 is still, well, Windows ... prone to file corruption. I suppose same can be said for Mac OS and Linux.
