Fed up with Dell, getting an HP, need help..

Hey folks. Absolutely fed-up with the shambles that is Dell computers. Long story short, I have been trying to get a replacement for my GPU in my I8600 (which they never fixed properly when it was under warranty). Had to go through spare parts. First time they sent me the wrong card. Second time I allowed myself to be talked into a lesser GPU (Go 5650 instead of a 9600 PT) because "they didn't have any" of the Radeon cards. The card arrives and it is DOA. So I call up and they refuse to pay for shipping unless I talk to customer service first. I would rather die than spend 2 hours on the phone with some moron reading from a manual to confirm what I already know. So I pay for the shipping back. Then I do some research here and I actually find the part # for the Radeon PT in a thread, call them back, and Oh yeah, we have plenty. WTF?!?! So I buy a Dell and besides forking out big $$, I have to play repairman, inventory supervisor and shipping manager for nothing.
I ordered the Radeon card. Going to stick it in my machine and sell the damn thing asap. Dell will never get another dime from me, period.

I have heard some good things about HP and have been researching my options. Looks like the DV4000 or DV1000t fit the bill. The DV4000 is pretty straight forward and I know what I'm looking at there. The DV1000t, however, has a couple of components I have never had in a PC before. First, the integrated Intel GPU. Will it be sufficient to play games like CIV 4, Rise of Nations, Hearts of Iron, etc., at decent settings? Second, the dual core proc. This is a work, home, travel machine. What is the real benefit, if any, of shelling out the extra $$ for this set-up?

Sorry 'bout the rant and thanks for the help in advance.

Well, with the dv4000 the X700 is part of the motherboard. And is NOT replaceable. I have a buddy that plays World of Warcraft on his Dell I6000 with intergrated Intel GMA 900 Gfx. Runs it at 1280x800 medium settings, about 25fps.

I'll tell you one thing about HP, their support is absolutely worthless.

These clueless Idiots in India don't know anything. Unbelieveable how bad the support on these machines are.

Not to mention the whole raft of shit they install on first bootup with NO options whatsoever to the end user. By the time a brand new TC4200 finished installing all the worthless garbage they want in it there's over 400mb of ram used to boot.

Nobody there at support knows anything.

I like this hardware but the support is the absolute worst I've seen to date.

I somewhat agree, except when it came to asking for a replacement. I had an x1000 and had sent it back around 5 times over 2 years. Mainly due to faulty video card issues. So I called and asked for a replacement. They hooked me up with a brand new dv4000 w/ the x700 chip. They even upgaded my processor to 2ghz (from 1.7), upgaded my hd to 80gigs (from 60), my memory from 128 to 512, and they threw in an extra battery (high capacity one), all for free. I have had the laptop since October and have not had a single problem. Sometimes its just hit or miss with HP.

Seems like an industry scourge. Dell has just PO'd me so bad with this latest nonsense that I just can't buy another product from them. What angers me more about those guys is if you buy a real top-of-the-line machine (XPS) you supposedly get "top quality" customer service. So they are basically admitting their general service blows. Unacceptable, IMHO. $2,500.00 on an i9400 is the same as $2,500.00 on an XPS.

I'm probably engaging is wishful thinking with HP but, like you, I like the hardware and price.

Don't know firsthand, but from what I've read HP screens are quite a bit better (in general but not in every case) than their Dell counterparts. They still fall well short of a desktop lcd but they are far closer (HP) than Dell has managed to get.
