If those are Sony DVD-R it's normal. Buy 1-8X version of media and it'll burn at 8X just fine. It's media compatibility problem: the newest/best media is most likely to be incompatible and drive "falls back" to reliable 2X recording.
well there is no crack for such a reason. Future firmwares of the device should provide greater compatibility, but there hasn't been one released so far. Also other programs (nero) might be able to burn discs that nti doesn't recognize. Nti burned my ritech disks at 4x whereas nero burns them at 8x. Other media though did burn at lower speeds with both programms...
16X media doesn't always mean it will burn at all lower speeds... media rated for 16X is mostly just that, rated for 16X, and not necessarily for 8X..
Try 8X media... I burn all Ritek 8X at this speed w/o any issues
