Danny, I can compare the fan noise to be as loud as the cdrom player spinning. The heat coming out of the vents are hotter than other laptops I've used but these don't bother me at all.

Dear DanyB,

The fan is quieter than my desktop tower, and is lower pitched. Actually, it is more "white noise," where the tower is more of a hum. One might notice it more because it is intermittent, rather than constant, which tends to make the noise unnoticeable after a while. Recording it would be rather useless, since the volume would be dependent on your speaker volume. Comparing it to the CDROM spinning is pretty accurate, although I have two CDROMs on my desktop, and one is louder than the other. I think anything that I could compare it to is relative (my car vent fan set to low, my central air when it kicks on, etc.) and not likely to help you. I know that I don't find it at all obtrusive.

I think that the bottom of the lappy gets mighty toasty sometimes, particularly when I'm installing programs with multiple CDs. It hasn't been a problem at all, because I usually have several layers of clothes, if not blankets (the house is chilly) in between the lappy and me, but come July, I'm thinking maybe I'll get one of the bed desks from Costco. I don't know how ergonomically correct they are, but its better than getting a first degree burn. Besides, the top of the desk does tilt up, which should please LeeT, who wanted the keyboard to have the option to slant. I find the flat position more comfortable. I think the keyboard is well designed, with a good place to rest my wrists, and the touch pad ideally located to move the cursor with the bases of my thumbs without even taking my fingers from the keys.

Varignet - I have a US supplier who can obtain this notebook for me in the UK. I ordered one myself, and it is the bomb. As it has an international warranty, there should be no issues should it break down. If you are interested in purchasing, contact me and we can discuss it further.

Thanks.

According to the below link, the N5010 has a PS/2 connector. Is it me, or is that blatantly wrong? I cant see one anywhere on mine. Have an old keyboard, that I would love to be able to connect. For a touch typist like myself, it is the best I have ever used, so dont want to do it for just novelty value.

I think it's saying that you can have a PC Card that supplies a PS/2 Port.

Rabh:

Sorry but only USB connectors as far as I know too. You can buy a USB to PS/2 adapter quite cheap. Here's a link to one place:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati....asp?CatId=469 You can do a search on Google.com for more info. Simply type in "USB to ps/2" for a whole list of companies that sell these.

I have never tried one of these so I don't know how well they work. But I plan to purchase one after I receive my N5010 for the same reason. Hope this helps.

Later

Hmmm...I answered my own question. It seems that the MVA and CV screens come from a company named CHI MEI Optoelectrics, and the chassis comes from Uniwill, Wistron, and Quanta. In particular the N5010 is made by Wistron.

A bit confused about what Fujitsu want sent to them for the rebate. Is it the white label that goes across the lid and onto the front?

I've taken a pic to demonstrate:

http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~sp200/Pics/box.JPG

Is that what I need to cut off? And can I just cut off the part on the lid, so it doesnt wreck the box too much?

Thanks.

Rabh, you know, I had the same dilema. In the end, I only cut off the part on the lid (I didn't want to destoy the box in case I ever had to send the unit back for some reason). The piece I cut off roughly matched the dimensions stated on the rebate form (I think 3X5?) so I figured it would be fine. Unfortunately, I didn't get around to sending it in until about 3 weeks ago, so thus far, I haven't received the rebate.

I too sent in the piece from the lid.

Since many of you bought your N5010 from Global Computers, I thought I'd ask you guys this question:

resellerratings list Global Computers' website as www.laptopinc.com, while the list one of you gave was www.laptopsinc.com. It's not that much of a problem, since if you type in "www.laptopinc.com", you will be directed to "www.laptopsinc.com". However, if you type in "laptopinc.com" (without the "www."), you will be directed to another reseller named PortableOne. PortableOne has a website very similar to Global Computers'. And if you type "www.portableone.com", you will be directed to "www.laptopsinc.com". What's going on?

In my dealings with them (I haven't yet received the notebook), I've gotten emails from representatives from www.portable1.com, www.PortableOne.com, and laptopinc.com, so they are definitely the same company with many different domains. WHY they have all of them, I have no idea.

Can anyone who has the N5010 comment on the fan issue. I've read comments on the Fujitsu N3000 having a noisy fan and concerns here about the N5010 fan. Is the fan in your N5010 coming on because of the demands of video gaming or does this computer get hot when you are web surfing or or using less demanding applications?
Has anyone tried getting a refund from Global yet? I sent back my n5010 a week ago because of a dead pixel and was told that it would take 3-4 days for it to process. It is now day 5 but nothing has happened. I hope these guys honor their "100% satisfaction guarantee".

What About Media Center?

I've seen the Sony GRT260 XBRITE screen and was duly impressed. The Fujitsu N5000 series seems to be a strong rival, although I can't locate a dealer in my area to see for myself.

With the amazing screen, I can see myself wanting to do TiVo-like recording and watching the programs I've recorded on the laptop in my bedroom. Or burning them to DVD. The Sony offers Gigapocket, and some Toshibas and HPs offer Windows Media Center Edition. Fujitsu doesn't offer anything comparable, it appears. Does anyone know if they're planning on it, or if there's some other way to do this (perhaps some USB device?)...

The greatest piece of PVR software is Snapstream's PVR, now renamed BeyoundTV. You can get that in addition to a FireWire or USB TV Tuner.
