Fujitsu N5010 --A Brief Review - Page 2

It's always a shock when you come to seek wisdom at the mountain and find out that the guru at the top is a freshman in college. And apparently, a freshman that has $1800-2100 to blow on a computer. Well, congratulations to you, both for your scope of research, and for being able to finance your notebook dreams. And may you continue to bestow guidance to others, although, I can't resist pointing out, that I am old enough to be your pediatrician! (or are you old enough to drink legally?)
I suppose the drinking depends on the Country .. I just hope first-hand incite will help others with their decisions on their laptops purchases..

Today fedex arrived and brought me the Fujistu's N5010. I opened up the package and unpacked the unit. When I saw it I noticed how solid it is manufactured. The screen is amazing and can compete well against my crt.

Does anyone know a way to put up the refresh rate to 100 hz ?
(if there is even that possibility with a laptop screen)

here are the pics I have took of the unit
I will post more details later

I am pretty sure that you are not supposed to change the refresh rate when dealing with Laptop LCD's. They are not configured the same as CRT monitors and you will see no benefit. You may also damage the screen. (I am not sure). I would leave the refresh rate where it's at for now. If you do a search you will probably get a lot of info on the subject.

I can't wait to hear more about how you like it. After talking to others and doing a ton of research, I am now leaning toward the N5010 as the leading choice. Hope it's everything you expected, and more.

Refresh rate always say 60hz on an lcd. I don't think it has the same impact or meaning as a 60hz on a CRt. For LCD the measurements that matters is response time and contrast.

After playing with my new laptop I must say that I made the right decision in buying this beautiful piece of electronic. It is very nice manufactured and the screen is simply amazing. It has brighter colors than my 21” Sony CRT.
As far as ghosting in video games, the screen performs well. There is only minor ghosting which I expect from a 20 ms LCD.
The laptop is very stable but gets very hot on the top left side.

Some people complained about the speakers that they have no integrated subwoofer. Fujitsu should have done this but I never expect good speakers from Fujitsu. I have owned several Lifebooks and they all had horrible speakers. (Probably one of the worst speakers on the market)
I actually was surprised with the clarity of the speaker. The highs sound very nice and crisp.

I did swipe out the hard drive to a 60 GB 7200 RPM. Everything below 7200 RPM will slow down the system with its generous hardware.

What I really like is the SD card port. I own a Treo 600 and it makes it much easier to put my mp3’s, word documents and other files on my Treo using that slot.

The wireless does work great and I get great reception even though the antenna is integrated. I can pick up several other networks around our neighborhood which I couldn’t with my old netgear wireless G card.

The keyboard is also great and reminds me a little bit of a Thinkpad keyboard.

This is my 4th Fujitsu and defiantly not my last one.

As far as price goes I think it is justified to spend over $2000.00 for a 10 pounds desktop replacement. If you compare Sony and HP’s similar configured desktop replacements the Fujitsu stands out far more. The laptop is manufactured much better and the screen is the best on the market.

<sigh>

I'm sitting on the fence, thinking what laptop to replace my Thinkpad A20p.

I would like to have smaller form, lighter laptop, better screen, better display card (Radeon 9600) and definitely a Pentium M.

Looks like a laptop like that is not in the cards.

After having seen MVA premium 20" screen (Formac Gallery 2010) I can say that it is the best TFT I've seen. And I've seen many.

If the laptop version of MVA is anywhere near that quality level, it's a huge step up from ordinary notebook displays.

Why, oh why don't manufacturers understand that Pentium M is a high end number cruncher, which can't be paired with sub-par display adapters and lousy displays

Halcy

That N5010 is sooooo cool. If only Fujitsu would offer it with the 128 MB ATI 9600, I'd be all over that notebook!!!

I get fujitsu N5010 today and after play all days. I'm so happy with it but I have one question about intel sticker, it's only a pentium4 sticker not pentium4HT is it correct in my com? also I see pics. from Prozac and LeeT it look the same.
It's just the sticker.. I never thought much on it
But there is in fact a H\T model in the laptop

Does anyone know if the N5010 can be upgraded to a different CPU (such as a Pentium M or any successor) in the future? I wouldn't change it right away, but it would be nice to know if the option were there for the future.
thats not going to happen... 100% sure. What benefit other than the price would be in having a Pentium M in there?

The 3.0 Ghz P4 HTT is much better than the P-M.

10 LP and carries a P-M ? no way

After much debate, I decided to sell my Gateway m505xl and purchase a n5010 through Global Computers. I am a notebook junkie and thinking about that awsome 16" screen kept me up at nights. I opted for the 2.8 ghz with 256 mb ram with dvd-rw option. I also put in an order for the 512 stick of ram that they had listed on their site for an additional $119. I was somewhat leary about ordering through Global but I searched through these forums and they seem to have a good rep with everyone and their reseller rating was acceptable. I also emailed them regarding their dead pixel policy and they promptly emailed me back with a "100% customer satisfaction" statement from their rep Ivan. I put in on my AMEX card so if I need to return it, it won't be too much of a hassel. I just hope that I get a perfect machine.

ps: For you owners out there, what is your typical battery time?

Shai-Hulud:

I just placed my order for the N5010 a few days ago. It was on back order but they said I should still get it by next week. I also went with Global/Laptops.Inc. I have had nothing but exceptional experiences each time I have communicated with them with questions. So far jmkay03, LeeT, and Prozac ordered and received theirs with no complaints or defects. Olio also ordered and is waiting for his. jmkay03 and LeeT helped in making my decision. (especially LeeT's picts) Here's hoping ours are perfect too.

Global Computers is a very good online store. I have been ordering my laptops there for 2 years and they never dissapointed me. I have purchased 5 laptops and received great customer support and price.

I would rather order from Global Computers than any other store. In some incident I decided to return one laptop for another model. They sent me the new model first so I could transfer all my files to one to another.

Prozac:

How many Fujitsu's have you purchased from Global? And out of all of them how many dead pixels from each? I am extremely curious to find out what their batting average is. They keep on sounding better and better.

Thanks a Lot

Shai-Hulud -- I know you will be pleased with your purchase. I continue to use and enjoy my N5010 every day. I have probably averaged 8-10 hours a day --having it tuned on and using it either for work or games. It has never over-heated, locked up or crashed, and has performed flawlessly. I am creating a video this week (sifting through several hours of digital video and hundereds of pictures) and it is working great. My eyes just don't get as tired because the screen is so sharp and bright.

As to my experience with Global Computers, yes, I was very pleased with my experience there. They actually did two things that were nice little "extras" that they did not have to do and that I did not expect of them. The first was that when they upgraded my harddrive to the 80 gig 5400rpm, they loaded XP Pro instead of XP Home, which I prefer. (I am assuming Global did this, but it could have been Funjitsu's doing at the factory, though they advertise the 5010 with XP Home. I'd be curious to hear from jmkay03 or others as to which version theirs came with). Second, I needed the new HDD partitioned with a 20 gig "D" drive (its a long story), but I had inquired on the phone with Global about this option. They told me custom partitioning would be $50 more, so I said, "No, thanks". They did it anyway at no extra charge. Actually, my unit shipped out a day late, so I assumed they were making up for the tardy shipment. Still, it saved me the hassle of copying the HDD, repartioning and reformatting, so I very much appreciate their efforts.

I do look forward to your comments and thoughts when you receive yours (as well as KPEddison and others who may have orded recently)

Olio, as to your enquiry about the Hyper-threading, jmkay03 is correct --you'll notice in your BIOS setup (F2 at startup) that it has an option to turn on/off HT. The factory default is "ON" , and I can't imagine why one would want to turn it off, but it is there none-the-less.
Hello!
Ok, I'm starting backwards here: Agreeing with Leet, who would want to turn off hyperthreading? Its multi-tasking at an entire new level!
KP: I'd also be glad to hear about your experiences with your purchase (It's always nice to hear someone joined the N5 crew )
As for updates from me: I'm not sure why I didn't go with the faster hard-drive..
The only other hard-drive's I have worked with have all been SCSI, so coming from a 10,000RPM SCSI drive to a 4,200 ATA drive was killer, And I'm noticing an *incredible* difference in the speed.
The 4,200 would be perfect for stability and its stealthness, But it just doesn't cut it for me. I'm going to be looking for hard-drive replacements, maybe someone will be running a deal on nice ones.

LeeT: My machine came with Windows Home installed, I didn't order any operating system with my machine, so it came with no Windows CD; No worries because as soon as I got the machine I formatted, repartitioned and went to XP Professional.

kpeddison,

I have ordered 5 laptops at Global Computers and none came with a dead pixel. I guess I got lucky so far.

jmkay03,
I would definatly upgrade the hdd to a 7200 RPM hard drive. A 4200 RPM slows down the whole system. I'm surprised why Fujitsu doesn't use at least a 5200 RPM hdd.

Thanks, LeeT
I love my lappy no dead pixels. One thing that quite not good is speaker sound. I plan to find headphone which can improve sound quality.
