New Pioneer DVD Burner - Slot Loading - Page 2

Gonna try to get a 6750a from NewEgg though I'll have to do it in a round about sort of way to get it up to the great white north. Is it possible to remove the front bezel from my orig DVDRW and snap it onto the new drive without damaging it? I know it's possible with dekstop drives.

The only drives that will fill up the slot properly are the ones from dell that have the custom faceplate (it sticks out and around by a mm or so).

It might be possible, just like with desktop drives it depends on whether the patrs are connected the same on each drive.

Anyways, it is hardly noticable and a price worth paying for a decent drive...

Is the NEC burner or the Slot loading driver better than the ones that Dell ships with their notebooks? I know I can get one off of ebay, and if it's just as good, I'd rather it fit perfectly.

Does anyone know if this will fit in a 9300???

I'm thinking of this one too, I found a better deal though:

$87 with free 2nd day shipping:

Must resist.... just spent money upgrading HD!

Even a normal NEC burner wont 'fit perfectly', the ones from Dell have a custom faceplate...

The K05 (or K15 is you dont want a slot loader) is a great drive and I have never had a single problem.

Ordered the 6750a just now. Hopefully my buddy will send it up to me for next week so I can test it out and let you know. I love my NEC Ext DVDRW (3520a with Liggy & Dee firmware) so I have high hopes for this drive. Now I wonder if I could put this Sony of mine into my 8200......I know I can remove the bezel from my current DVD drive in that one.

should be able to fill the hole with black silicone.
silicone would be messy. just think if you ever have to take it out. i have the drive in question and was really worried about the gap. after installing it is a no issue. i was however going to remove the drive and put some black double sided tape from a auto parts store on the drive (all the way around the drive up against the face plate then reinstall the drive when i had the time to take up the little space. The side of the tape will be what you see all the way around the drive and will look perfect.

Just don't use any CD's or DVD's with paper labels. The mechanism has a very difficult time pushing it out, causing jams. That's the primary reason I've avoided slot-load drives since my 12x Pioneer CD-ROM.

The faceplate from the dell CDRW-DVD is removable; I took mine off to test my drive in another lappy that had a bad one. I then put the faceplate back on with no problems!! I did not test it on a different drive though.

So what is the general consensus on the best drive, slot loading or not? I am going to put my Dell TSST CDRW-DVD-ROM into a different lappy and then get a DVD burner for my 9300. I REALLY like the idea of the slot loader, but if there are too many issues.... So any suggestions / opinions on various drives?

i avoid paper label ones totally. Thats coz if the label doesnt cover the entire surface evenly, it may screw up the drive coz of uneven centrifugal force..

Slot loading drives seem fine for desktops and automobiles, but I wouldn't use them for notebooks. In the process of moving your laptop around, dirt, dust, etc could get stuck the the fuzzy thing in the slot, and when you go to insert a CD, scratch it.

Probably pretty unlikely, but it's probably more likely to happen with a slot loader than a tray loader.

I have been eyeing the DVR-k05 for a couple months now. I had an old Pioneer DVD slot drive, like 4 years old, in an external enclosure and was using it, but it finaly croaked. No prob, just an excuse to get the k05, ordered it today from zipzoomfly

Using my computer as an HTPC the drive gets a workout, movies burning and gaming, and my real concern is someone (my wife) will accidentally break off the fragile disc tray. No more tray, no more fears!

PS anyone know of any good slim drive enclosures? Gotta do something with my existing drive.

Now I'm thinking of the NEC ND-6750A!!! Well, I've got a few days to think about it!!

So I ended up getting the Pionner slot drive. I love slot drives, especially in a notebook. Easy installations and it looks good in my 9300. It sits recessed in the
notebook, not a perfect fit but very acceptable. I am fairly anal about appearance.

Now we will have to see how it performs. That will be the test.

I've burnt a lot of different media and never had any problems at any speed...

I quite like the 'recessed' look, certainly doesn't look out of place.
