this may be a lenthy post since im going crazy trying to get my audio correct
for one when i hook up the 8880 to my stereo using the headphone out during times when i dont have music playing.. i get what i belive to be 4200 rpm harddrive drones...i disabled the ir but that was not the fix...i can live with that though ive had my machine for years now..i love it...not the drone but the machine..i want to connect my guitar to the mic input to use a program called revalver a guitar amp emu..
but im not hearing any thing as an imput..im new to computers so any detailed help will be appreciated..ive tried to read the posts but am confused i have the ac97 sound card and the tv card installed...i remember a cable that came with the comp that goes into the spdif/mic slot.but it is lost...i have a sound effect manager on the toolbar but dont know what it does...i have the av rack prog...ive tried the volume control options im stuck..i heard something about changing the bios.i also have a floor processor(digitech)that outputs a spdif signal to the computer...i want to try to use a rca female to 1/8 mono male input into the comps spdif jack....is the line in jack or the one i think is line in.. the middle one? is that where i would input a output from an x box or vcr? it ..does not let me do anything either..as for the revalver prog im using a standar guitar cable whith a mono 1/8 adapter into whatever hole works...thanx in advance for the people who get me hooked up..ill include your name in the cd liner if i ever get famous.. once i get connected ill tell you how the drone may or may not affect the recordings..as i dont have money yet for studio gear..

A couple of things, in Volume Control, make sure you turn off the SP/DIV or at least mute it. I've found I get a lot of noise off that. There are also some drivers or bios that help solve this problem, there have been a number of threads dealing with it in these forums, so do a search for that. I've also found the mic jack sometimes requires some fiddling.
Another thing is the Auxilary Line In is tied to the TV Tuner and won't work unless the TV Tuner Program is running, a really stupid setup that should be fixed. It makes that jack nearly useless. There are some threads that deal with that as well.

There is a lot of information on every aspect of SAGERs in here and the search function is quite good, still, with as many posts as there have been, it can take a while to ferret something out. Its in there!!! Good Luck!

I'd also like to add that the headphone jack is less then ideal for using as input to your stereo. Your stereo isn't really designed to take the voltage level that the headphone jack outputs and will produce distortion and worst case scenario 'blow out' the input circuitry of your stereo.

Onto the noise issue. I'm not sure which input your using but the headphones sound best when the master volume is almost all the way up and all the other inputs are at the lowest level except the one your using.
Example, when playing music I have the master volume all the way up and the wav volume up just loud enough to overcome the background hiss of the analog sound card.

Which brings me to this point, being that the sound card is analog you will have some background hiss.

The drone noise could be several things such as feedback from the harddrive, fans, network card, or some sort of ground loop. If it's ground loop you could try removing the AC power from the laptop and see if the noise goes away.
You could also try unplugging each of your inputs to the laptop and see any of those get rid of the noise. If it's fan noise or harddrive that's going to be very difficult to remove.
