Leaving Notebook On For Long Periods? - Page 2

Mine's only off when I'm at work (and that's only because I wouldn't take this to my office with those Philistines. ... ). The only adverse effect I can see is an occasional bout of image persistence.

thats why you should set the lcd to turn off after 5 minutes or so.

It is. I just use it too much. It doesn't get a chance to turn off.

Silicon will either break within the first couple of days/weeks/months of use, or last forever. There are people out there with old mid-90's IBM laptops acting as servers stuck in some corner of their house, always on, probably rebooted 3 times in their entire lifespan.

Leaving a laptop on is almost the same as leaving a desktop on. Make sure it is properly cooled, try to have devices not in use (LCD, attached accessories, etc) turned off to save power and extend their life, a restart every now and again is nice, maintain your OS/Virus/Spyware updates, etc.

However, I dont think you need to be very vigilant about rebooting because if the software is properly designed, there are no memeory leaks.

Doc, for those of us that are tools challenged.. you think you could do a photo walkthru of what you do for the fans?

i've got this phobia about opening my 9300 and voiding the warranty somehow. :P

btw, for the OP:

i still have my old dell inspiron 7500 from about 5-6 yrs ago. i gave it to my dad about a year ago and he's using it as the kitchen pc. when i had it, it was on 24x7. so, just to tell you that it doesn't hurt it.

what does hurt is when you close your laptop and put it in your laptop bag and not realizing that it didn't go into standby correctly and is really on the whole time. that will positively harm your laptop. i know it from my personal experience. 2 weeks ago my lattitude d610 just died, since this d610 was from work, i never really took care of it and i've had it "burning hot" in my laptop bag quite a few times because i was in a hurry. in comparison, this particular d610 has only been with me for a little over 2 years.

hope that helps!

Go to the dell 9300 support page and they have good photo walkthroughs of just about everything. You want the one about removing the palmrest. Once that's off, the fans are just a couple screws away from popping out.

1. Keep track of your screws by placing them inside of something... do not just leave them lying around on the table or bad things will happen.

2. When putting screws back in, don't over tighten them. "Snug" is good enough for this kind of stuff.

3. To prevent cross-threading screws when you put them back in, put the screw in and turn it like you're trying to unscrew it until you hear/feel a little pop as the threads line up, then slowly start to screw it in. If you meet a lot of resistance well before the screw is all the way in, stop and back it out and try again. (This is not that common of a problem as long as you take your time, but it's good general advice just in case.)
