8600 WUXGA annoyance

On my dell inspiron 8600 (ati 9600) I have the power management software set to "Do Nothing" when I close the lid on the computer. When it's closed it does turn off the monitor, which of couse is ok since it can't be seen when closed anyway. However when I re-open the lid the monitor starts in a very low resolution and then switches quickly back to 1920-1200. This causes any open windows such as photoshop to rearrange itself for the low resolution which is quite annoying. Anyone else seen this problem? Workarounds or solutions?

Thanks,
J

I have the wuxga with ati 9600 and I don't have this problem. I just tried what you described and the windows and resolution is the same as when I closed the lid. I haven't had any issues with mine except the bouncy keyboard which I fixed with a few small pieces of double sided sticky tape. So far its running fast, cool, and quiet. Good luck.

Haboda - Where did you place the tape pieces? I had that same bounce/flex on the right side of my 8600's keyboard.

Sounds kinda like there's a loose or defective cable. I hate to suggest this, but have you tried...pauses to consider the horrific implications of his forthcoming suggestion...calling Dell's tech support?

...running from and dodging the volley of rotten vegetables and fruit being thrown at him...

An RMA might be in order. Dell is pretty good at their return process.

I just tried web based support :-/

" We have received your message.
Thank you for contacting Dell Technical Support."

We'll see how that goes.. Argh.

Found the bad guy
ATI Hotkey Poller
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Ati2evxx.exe

I've had ATI's before, I should have known.

I found that the right side had some foam strips but the left didn't. So I took four pieces about 1/4 inch long and just stuck them on the left lower side. I would say they are under the caps lock, ctrl, w, and D buttons roughly. It was just enough to take the spring out of it but now the right side feels a bit bouncy due to the left being so firm. Its no where near as bad as the 5680 that I had.

This resolution switching problem is fixed if you install the Catalyst 4.2 driver using the instructions found here:
http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=16879

Quote:
patch the ati catalyst driver
http://www.ati.com/products/catalyst/index.html

get this prog http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/

uninstall the other ati driver, reboot

install the catalyst, when u get message of wrong hardware, open patje prog.
press start modding, install catalyst again and reboot.

As a side note, I also had this problem, however I'm running the Omega drivers now and they don't seem to suffer from it. Note you don't get access to all the resolutions you once had (1280x800 notibly is missing.)
