is there a secret to burning dvds?

I have a 9880, with a lightscribe enabled dvd burner, and so far my success rate with burns is like 4 successes out of 30 or so.... memorex and hp dvd's tried...

my friend tells me you fail less if you burn right after rebooting, and don't do anything on the computer when you are, but that doesn't seem to work either.... wtf am I doing wrong?

What media dye type are you using? Burn speeds? Drive firmware? No you don't have to reboot first before burning but if you do lots of things and the HD is going mental then you can get a burn failure (buffer underrun) What software are you using? My failure rate has been around zero unless my own fault (firewire cable plopping out)

try 2x burn speed, sounds like buffer underrun. Our harddrives (in teh 5720 at least) are SLOW

bleh... I did spend extra for a 7200 rpm HD, just never knew it mattered when burning.... isn't 7200 standard for desktop HD's? though now that i think of it, i had like a 40% or so success rate with burning cd's too........
mebe the burn gods just hate me...

You should try to burn at a slower speed.. like 4x or slower.. that does the trick most of the time.

Try burning at a slower rate and try different media. Some drives don't like certain brands apparently.

Just today, on my desktop (AMD 3500+, 1gig), I had Trillian, Azureus, Firefox, Horas timeclock, Media Player Classic and a bunch of other bkgd items running (Gmail notifier, MS Anti-spyware, A/V, firewall, etc.) and burnt a DVD with Nero and had no problem. I rarely have coasters. The only 2 burning programs I use are Nero and DVD Shrink.

Speed might help, but I would guess it's the media. You might be able to burn the discs you have now at 2x or 4x, but if you find some that your drive "likes," then you should be able to crank it up to 8x.

Just my limited experience there. There's more experienced people than I here on the forums.

Nero can be flaky

I had a similar problem with my 8790. I often blow out my computer to keep all the dust out. I couldn't burn a DVD or even read one well. I got this CD-ROM cleaning thing that is basically a CD with a brush on it. Ran it for 1 minute and my drive was like new again.

I would suggest increasing the cache for your buffer. I have had great success with Verbatim. I use Nero Version 7, Roxio CD/DVD creator 8 and Alcohol 120% and never have problems.
