Does it say in the order confirmation e-mail you were sent which type it is? I would go by that....and if it says -R you should be safe.

Yeah you cant use +DVD-R with a - writer. Thats what comes with the Area51M
Wait till u get your computer and if you can use your DVD's exchange them for the right one. Play stupid with them if you have to(the store)
What does your order say Sebayn? Its it says DVD-RW then the - will work. Not the + I called AW just to make sure so i didnt buy the wrong DVD's

My order says -R so I should be in the clear.

Don't count your lucky stars - I just rang AW after reading this post and the rep said that my -rw had been substituted for a +rw. I got really angry and told the rep my order confirmation shows a -rw and that that is what my laptop will have when it ships! I can't believe that they just went and changed my order without even contacting me first to inform me. The rep said it wasa stock issue to which I replied "I don't give a sh#t - your inventory employees should therefore be the ones paying for poor management - not the customer!". I got the standard reply "sorry sir...sorry sir" and then the guy asked me to ring back in 24hrs and he will have an answer for me, to which I replied "you must be f#cking joking" (or something similar) "you will be ringing me today with and explanation or it will be your arse!

One thing is for sure - I never imagined ordering a laptop would be so bloody difficult and frustrating.

P.S. what are the major pros and cons of a -rw vs. a +rw (I believe a -rw is better right?)

I'll Do a trade!

If any of you guys get a laptop with a dvd+rw instead of dvd-rw I will be willing to do a trade! I have the dvd-rw and I have a dvd+rwin my desktop I would like them both to be the same so I only have to buy 1 tyep of media! In fact i was going to call and ask if i could swap it for the new dvd+rw but if I can help one of you guys out and avoid the 15% resocking fee or whatever else they would want to charge me to do that that would be great.

I dont know 2 much about the diff. and Im sure you know more then me about that.
Just got off the phone with AW and they told me that mine shipped with the - DVD which is good because I have 100 blank DVD-R that Im going to be using for my DVD's.

when did you order your notebook?
I ordered Dec, 4th and I called AW and they told me that I got the - DVD not the + one...thank god.
I really dont care which one I got I just wanted the - one because thats what I thought I was getting and bought 100 blank - DVD's
post #12 of 20
My payment was received on the 18th of Dec - but anyway, I'm not really pissed that I'm getting a +rw, it is just the fact that they didn't even bother to ask or explain - they just assumed. By the way, I am only at phas 6 as of today - this is so slow and painful :-(

I want the DVD+RW becaue I have a bunch of Blank DVD+RW's for my desktop I also found my DVD player and my XBOX will play DVD+RW's but not DVD-RW's DVD-R is an older standard it workd just fine with most DVD players but some just wont read it I have had great luck with my DVD+RW.
If any body is up for a Trade Just let me know If not I may call Alienware and see what I can do to swap it for the +RW jsut saves me money Not having to buy -RW Media and can Use my +RW media for both.

I have that same program and it works wonderfuly the only problem is i found a way to do it with free programs even better. DVD x Copy makes you use 2 discs to get all the stuff off the DVD menus extras and all no way to compress or take out any of it and sqash it down to fit on one disk. However DVD Shrink which you can find in the useful freeware and tweaks section will rip the dvd let you cut out what you don't want and compress it to fit on one disk Now DVD x Copy is a great program and When I want all the content off the DVD I still use it but some movies Id rather jsut get the plain movie and no extras on one disk. DVD shrink willnot burn the DVD you have to do that your self just put the files DVD shrink makes into a VIDEO_TS folder burn it to DVD and you are set or you can use the NERO DVD burning software that will come with your laptop works just as well. My PS2 plays every thing I can throw at it. So you are probably safe.

DVD x Copy - Great for noobs Put DVD in hit copy wait put blank in hit burn done.
Thats about it.

DVD shrink compress files to fit on one disk. Can save files to HD Can view movies from HD saves battery.

But with the platium ediation you can fit a whole movie on one disk without losing a lot of quaility. I wrote 321 studios and they told me that you lose a little bit of video quailty but its not noticable to the human eye
I can wait to see this product in action

Oh my bad must be newer version hmm wonder If i can upgrade mine to do that that would make things alot easier I will hae to check into that. That was the only feature missing from DVD x Copy to make it perfect. Have fun burning sound like you are all set I just bought 50 more DVD+RW's at tiger direct for 50$ -RW's are even cheaper.

Happy Burning

Oh I got DVD X Cpoy Plus I got back in March last year the new one the platium edition is much better!
I got cunfused between plus and platinum both start with p so I was not far off
