This is just an FYI in case anyone's interested. I downloaded a keyboard remapping program, and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it also allowed me to easily change the function of those previously-pretty-useless "Audio DJ" buttons on the left side of my z70va. (I assume it can do the same for the hotkeys near the power button...I haven't tried that yet...and will also work with other models that have Audio DJ.)
The program is HotKeyboard Professional ( from http://www.hot-keyboard.com ) and I believe they have a fully-functional 30-day trial.
All I had to do was use the simple "Keyboard Layout Utility" to quickly make the Audio DJ buttons programmable just like any keyboard keys. Right now I've got three of them set for master-volume up/down/mute. Before that, I played around with them and found I could get them to easily control various functions of various media players (most of the players have keyboard shortcuts that you can program to the buttons, and WinAmp support is specifically built in to the program). (You could probably also "disable" the buttons -- as some posters have sought to do -- by setting the associated action to NONE or remapping them to mimic a keyboard sequence that does nothing.) But you can also create easy macros that program the buttons (and most keyboard keys) as hotkeys for for just about anything from launching programs to inserting a frequently-used blocks of text.
If you want the Audio DJ buttons (or any keyboard remappings) reverted back to their default state, just close the HotKeyboard program. Then when you want the customizations back, just launch it again.
BTW, I haven't tried (nor do I care about) the not-booted-up Audio DJ mode.
Also, you should probably check BklynKid's great work with HControl.exe first to see if it already addresses the mods you would like on the Audio DJ keys.(http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=78601).
