mobile pentium vs northwood

Thread Starter
I'm in the market for a notebook and want to know if the mobile pentium 4 is worth the money versus the northwood pentium 4. I plan on doing some traveling and may not have immediate access to an AC outlet, so I may need the battery life. Can someone enlighten me on the pros and cons.
I'm looking at ordering a Sager 5650 soon but may change my mind and get the Sager 5660.

Also what is "full range 110-220v AC, 50-60Hz Auto Sensing Auto Switching"? Does this mean if I'm in a foreign country with 220v the computer will adjust to the power?

Thanks for any help

The 5650 with the mobile processor I believe will probably get you between 10-15% longer battery life at most. The 5660 will get you 1.5-2 hours on the battery with the single battery setup. With the dual battery setup (floppy drive removed and battery in it's place) you will get *almost* twice that. The 5650 has the ATI 7500 ad the 5660 has the ATI 9000 which has I'm guessing over all 20% more performance with the video. Also, the 5650 has USB1.1 and the 5660 has USB 2.0. As far as raw chip comparison, the mobile 2.0GHZ 400FSB vs the 2.8GHZ 533 FSB, you're probably going to also get a good 20%+ gain in performance over all. My opinion is go with the 5660 with the dual battery setup unless you're needing much more than 3 hours of battery life. That's just my opinion though.

I think the P4 m pulls way too much power for the performance it gives. The desktop processor setup is like a dream come true for those of us LAN gamers needing and wanting the most powerful computer to be able to take with us to game somewhere.

I agree about the P4m. Hopefully Banias will provide more bang for the buck next year.

after just having owned a toshiba 5005 which had overheating problems due to running a desktop processor inside a laptop, wouldn't it make more sense to get a sager with a p4 mobile?

There actually was a discussion in another thread about that toshiba model and its problems. The conclusion by everyone here who owns one was that the toshiba was poorly designed and its PIII (I think it was a PIII) draws more power than the P4 which is on a .13 micron process chip. Here is a good link to read if you haven't already:

Also, consider that people who own it report less heat problems than with mobile laptops. I recommend reading through some of the older threads (which you have obviously been doing to get this one bumped back up here :-)) and seeing what has been said. Let us know if you have any questions or if you'd like more clarification (which other people on here will undoubtedly give you. Welcome!! And have a great day!

Whoa, that is an excellent analogy if I do say so myself :-) And I applaud your use of Ford as the parallel for toshiba and Toyota (they rule) as a parallel for Sager... :-)

with regard to heat, i did a lot of thinking and conjecturing about what laptop to buy and i was weighing between very light/micro/super cool but not very fast (crusoe processors) and bohemoths. my concern was that anything with a nearly 3ghz processor desktop p4 processor (or amd for that matter) would be INSANELY hot and you could never have it on your lap even for a few minutes.

well, i decided to go with the bohemoth and i must say that the 8886 is barely even warm after having been on all day. the multistage automatic fan system works very well (currently it isnt even blowing) but makes it a little obnoxious to take to a quiet classroom (it just kicked in as i said that hah) but honestly the power brick is FAR warmer than the computer itself. if anything were going to overheat, i'd put my money on the brick before the machine any day.

No, that's like saying "I've had 2 - 6 cylinder Ford engines blow up on me after 80K miles, so I would never buy a Toyota with a 6 cylinder."
Ford ( Fix Or Repair Daily!! ) Did you guys know that Toyota was voted best reliable car in the world . In the TUV tests in Europe they have had for the past years 1, 2, 3 place for used cars. Ha! Ha! Ha! I have had many cars and believe me Toyota is very reliable!

Any way on a more serious note as this not is a car forum to air my auto views, I do hope that Sager are taking note that the Battery issue is a major one for some people like myself.

Lol, I don't think that the battery issue will be addressed until the battery technology advances... Lithium ion made laptop battery time practical... something else will have to come out to really make much of a difference. Considering the huge battery they put in the 8886, they are obviously aware of it, but there is only so much they can do. I have a feeling from the forums that people who really need battery time don't get a sager or find a way to make due with the battery time available. When I get the 8886, I'll fiddle and see what I can come up with in terms of possible suggestions along those lines :-)

(lol, I've got a toyota... I wouldn't trade it for the world... Well, I might for a lifetime supply of sager lappies... the top of the line one once a year for my lifetime... But not for anything less :-)
