Trade your dell for $500 credit at Sony

To snare market share from Dell and boost its channel presence, Sony has begun offering $500 trade-in bonuses on Dell notebooks and paying solution providers additional spiffs.

Sony’s San Jose, Calif.-based IT products group, spearheaded by its Vaio unit, is making the push through the end of the first quarter as Dell works to get back on track after two subpar quarters last year.

"I think that's actually great," said Andrew Krantz, senior account manager at Westwood Computer, a solution provider and Sony partner based in Springfield, N.J. "Anything that targets Dell is good. Dell has a unique way of stealing business, so any way we could steal business back is positive."

Sony's trade-in offer of $500 for working Dell systems eclipses the $300 it provides for trade-ins on all other systems for Vaio BX series notebooks. Sony said the rebate can be claimed by solution providers for their clients. Such a trade-in would represent a hefty discount off the price of some of the Vaio BX notebooks, which start at a street price of $1,171.

The new spiffs provide $40 cash payments per unit on Sony Vaio BX laptops. The BX series systems are targeted at the commercial space through the solution provider channel.

Both the trade-in deal and the new spiffs last through the end of the first calendar quarter, according to Sony.

"Dell is my toughest competitor," Krantz said. "They're even a tougher competitor than other resellers."

Sony is taking on Dell at a time when the PC giant, which dominates the market in terms of share and price competition, is coming off two straight quarters last year that disappointed Wall Street. Sony itself went through reorganization in its U.S. IT group in 2005, after Howard Stringer ascended to the post of global chairman and CEO of the electronics, entertainment and computer behemoth.

The move also reflects the love-hate relationship between Sony and Dell. Stringer invited Dell Chairman Michael Dell to take part in his keynote address at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month, where both announced their backing of the upcoming Blu-ray Disc technology

If sony wasnt so expensive and if they made some decent gaming laptops im sure this would fly well with certain people.

If I could get $500 for my old Dell CPi I would do it in a heartbeat! Though only if I could get a system for under $1000 that had a x700 or better vid card.

permaban for MadmanTM, DO NOT leave obscene rep comments...

Now why would they do that? Do they need trustworthy computers to run Sony with?

Hey, I've got an idea. Would they give me $500 for my old CTX EzBook 700E? It's got a 2GB hard drive. ...

first of all it is even funny that sony IS making laptops, i think they should make cd players and cd players only

sony has a long years in front of it before even touching DELL's level on laptop technology, so this $500 is just pathetic, and would only fool beginners, i even found that quiet amusing

I was going to say something to this effect after working on a friend's Sony. Turns out that model had a soldering problem that was traced back to the factory, and nearly every VAIO PCG-GRZ630 would at some point lose contact with one of its memory banks. Yikes.

But I suppose it's not fair to judge an entire corporation by one poor product. I'll give them a chance. I just won't give 'em my Dell.

Wow if you take $500 off with trade in the Sony would be close in price to similar Dell Laptop. I like the Sony products I just do not like paying the money to have the word "Sony" on it.

I wonder how you can use this, if it could only be in shops or something? The reason I mention this is that my Sony TX was something stupid like 1,700 pounds in a Sony shop but I was able to pick it up for 1100 pounds online, so I saved 600 pounds which is about twice as much as 500 dollars. I've seen quite a few tradein schemes like this but the discounted price was still higher than what you could get it for online or from other shops.

who wants a crappy sony?? if we did we would of got one in the first place!
Uh. I would for one. Sony has one of the best ultraportables, and sleek looking laptops with XBrite (totally destroys just about all other laptop screens, except maybe Fujitsu).

However, Sony is not targetting the laptop enthusiast/gaming segment at this point. For business, school, work, I wouldn't mind a Sony.

But like people said, the price really hurts. I can get 2 ultraportables (the Averatec) for the price of 1 Sony...

I'm generally not a fan of Sony's but I have been very impressed with my TX - it's incredibly small and light yet it has incredible batterylife, onboard dvd burner etc. Price isn't so much of an issue here because Dells and other companies are nowhere near as cheap, my TX was cheaper than a base spec latitude X1.

So has anyone taken Sony up on this? Not that I don't expect them to get a few trade-ins, I'm just curious how it works. I never saw a link aside from the CNN story. I suppose it's a retail store-only thing.

Sony can kiss my f|_|cking ass.

First DRM.
Then Rootkits.
Always crappy computers.

Their computers are idiotically overpriced as it is; you'll save nothing to very little.
