Acer is difinitely not an American nor European company, it's from SE Asia but I don't know exactly its origins.

After a short search, it's Taiwanese.

holy crap! really?? thats odd Dell???

If your reply was sarcastic (can't tell) :-) Say those products are "designed" over here but built in China/Taiwan/Korea. Alienware may be a American company, but it certainly doesn't make 100% of the components in the USA. Perhaps one or two companies (say PSU) are 100% British, but component wise (transformer, resistors, capactors, PCB etc) made abroad.

If products were 100% locally made you can bet price tag won't be so low (quality will be inferior also)

Acer, along with Asus, are both Taiwanese companies. I know because my father is friend's with the founder of both

Nearly all notebooks nowadays are made in China with SE Asian components, exceptfor a very few brands (Dell is not one of them nor HP nor IBM) might be assembeled in European countries also with SE Asian components. This is the norm nowadays.

no i was not been sarcastic but dell is the worlds biggest computer brand
post #17 of 31
And because they're the biggest they can afford to source components from the cheapest country. That's not the UK or the USA. Same with clothing companies also. Did you know it's cheaper to make send the components to China, get them to build it, ship it back and it'll still be cheaper than being make in the UK?

If you're lucky a local will build it and install Windows (this is a custom build machine) Still standard far eastern made components - however off the shelf computers have their OS installed via restore CD (or straight to the HD over LAN/IDE connection) by some guy/gal in the Far East factory. When computers were in their infancy you did see "Made in the UK" but that's now gone :-( Same for Hi-Fi I've lost count the number of companies that have moved to the Far East for production purposes.

The call centre support departments are now being moved abroad. One computer company I worked for closed down the UK call centre then changed to Ireland (cheaper labour) then a few years after that closed that down and changed to India.

Since Dell moved to India the level of customer support is gone from good to lousy. Business contract with £10,000+ annual spending, 4 laptops, 2 DOA and refused replacement...had to take them to court. Avoid.
