Sony FE

Thread Starter
I really like the new Sony FE but I haven't found consistent information on benchmarks for the GeForce Go 7400. Will the machine below be able to play newer online FPS games (e.g. Battlefield 2, Doom 3)?

I've configured the system below for $1,398 and would appreciate some feedback from forum members. Is this a decent gaming machine? Usually Sony's are pricier than similarly configured machines from other companies, but this price seems on par with other duo core 15.4'' machines with decent video cards (e.g. Gateway NX560X). I'm going to order an additional gig of RAM from a different site. Any thoughts? Opinions are much appreciated. Thanks.

Looking forward to any advice on this because the Vaio FE is currently my first choice laptop for purchase out of all the new generation Dual Core laptops coming out.

I sent an email to nvidia couple wks ago about 7400 go series in regards to dedicated and shared memory and those eggheads over there sent me this.

"In terms of memory the geforce 6400 go has a Memory Interface of 64-bit plus Turbo Cache on board memory and Memory Bandwidth (GBps) of 5.6 GBps plus Turbo Cache and the GeFroce 7400 go has Memory Interface 64-bit and the Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec) 7.2 and Memory Data Rate (MHz) 900"

still waiting on a followup so will keep you posted.

have you guys considered the heat issues that will come with the duo processors? especially considering this is the first product lineup. Even on the singles, have seen notebooks with heating issues. Unless you are running apps that are thread intensive, you will see very lil difference between the single and the duo.

I really like to hear from someone that has bought the duo version and their opinion on the heating.

more spec for the 7400 from nvidia

"The total supported for this chip is up to 128MB local ram. This is the same TurboCache technology as the GeForce 6200TC series. The laptop or card manufacturer chooses how much physical ram they would like to use with their design."

So it's only good up to 128 or that means that is how much they put on it when the build the card?
Below is quoted from nvidia

"Lets take a entry level low end computer. For example it will come equipped with 512MB of system ram. If you install a GeForce 6/7 based card or module with TurboCache Technology that has 128MB Local Onboard Video Memory you will end up with 256MB Total Effective Video Memory. TurboCache can use system ram for video memory.

The only two variables are how much Local Video Memory the manufacturer uses on the card and how much system ram they install in the computer."

so in essence, Sony should able to tell us how much dedicated memory they are equiping the laptop with. however, the dedicated portion cannot exceed 128MB and the rest is made up by turbo cache shared thru RAM.

Hello,

I purchased, of course haven't received yet...

vaio fe 1.83duo core
nvidia upgrade
i chose the lowest amount of RAM available because of sony's ridiculous prices... I plain to upgrade when i receive it. I have become quite confused now with all the talk of how much dedicated vram there is and how much is possible with shared RAM can anyone explain this further?

it's discussed extensively on this thread as well.

does that clear up the haze?

"SHIP DATE UNKNOWN" ...and the sony rep says it will ship sometime after the 7th of Feb. Starting to piss me off a little...

Update FEB. 3rd... Sony Style rep now says delivery on Feb. 15th "MAYBE" ... #$%^&$* SONY
post #11 of 25
are you still gonna wait on it? looking forward to read your user experience.

I called the sony rep yesterday..... He said that the first shipments would start tomorrow... which now is today the 7th... And although i ordered on the very first day it was released that i was rather far down the list so mine would not ship until either friday the 10th or monday the 13th... and when i asked he also said most if not all are being upgraded (mine - most importantly!) to two day expedited shipping. I also asked about the RAM and he said that there was a total of 128mb of dedicated VRAM and depending on your system memory could be higher ...speaking of turbocache....

And finally has anyone made it out to Best Buy to see one on display?

words of caution ... when i was shopping for the FS760, I called sonystyle and asked about the dedicated memory. They told me over the phone that it is 128MB completed dedicated even tho the spec said "supports up to 128MB". I found out later that it only had 32 MB dedicated while the rest was made up in turbocache.

those sony rep really didn't know what they were talking about. So I hold my skepticism when you said 128MB dedicated. sounds like they are giving you the same runaround.

just make sure to verify it when you receive the unit. btw, it cannot be verified thru the conventional right click desktop property. There is a special way to do it. it's here somewhere on the forum.

I just looked at the FE's at Best Buy and there screen is the best screen I have ever seen. The whites were white, not a dingy version of it. I also noticed it had a purple finish that seemed to cut down on the glare.

Look at this specs about the FE11S:

http://www.vaio-link.com/specificati...=VGN-FE&m=2152

Quote:
Video Memory 128 MB DDR - Up to 256 MB shared with main memory
I hope to remove your doubts with this.
Debussy... thanks for that link.. i was actually a little skeptical myself, and was hoping that the 128mb was in fact the case!!
models in that link are not released in the US. these are Euro models -- the FE11s. FE590 are US versions...at least thats whats shown on sonystyle.com

so the spec from FE11 can't be applied to FE590.

this is the FE590 manual

http://www.docs.sony.com/release/spe...FE590_CTO_spec[1].pdf

under Graphics, it states ..

Video RAM: 256MB (with TurboCache) or 224 (Dynamically allocated Shared (RAM/Video) Memory)

sooo.. the difference is 32MB for dedicated. so i still reserve my doubt regarding sony's statement that it is 128MB dedicated.

I don't know what model this is, but they are a Japanese model... and i want one... Related to the FE? if so iam jealous.... Iam thinking its the corresponding Japanese FE.... or not iam just kinda crazy....

I saw an FE at the local best buy the other day. Nice computer. Display is amazing. The only I don't like is the keyboard. The keys have a circular shape and are white. Circular shape is a pain (for me) to type on and the color makes them get dirty really fast.

Timelines..

I called SonyStyle about the slipped ship date on my FE and the less than cluefull help desk person told me at least the end of the month before any shipping would occur. Very disapointing. Are people hearing similar?
