memory/hd problem need help

hello,

I used this forum quite a bit when purchasing my acer 2025 over a year ago, and was extremely impressed with the responsiveness and knowledge of the posters. I now have a problem that I hope someone can help me with.

recently, my notebook has started to stutter. I will see the hd light up, and anything i'm doing, whether surfing the web, listening to itunes, or working in a word document, will freeze for a 5-10 seconds, and then resume. I have 512 mb or ram, a 1.8 ghz pm, and an 80 gb 4200rpm hd (i know, bad news). I'm just wondering if this may be a memory issue, hd issue, and if i can work around it in any way without buying something new. Just a note, this is a new occurance, i never had a stuttering problem before. I run adaware and spybot, and defragment fairly regularly. I really hope someone knows whats up, thanks alot,

are you comfortable with backing up your files and reinstalling the operating system? if you are, i would start there and rule out a hardware issue. if you are not, i would keep trying to find a software issue that is known to cause the symptoms you are experiencing.

what would be the easiest/safest way to backup my drive. I have a dvd burner. Also, what is the benifit of a clean install? wouldn't i just be putting the same stuff back on? Thanks so much for the reply.

I think it too, you should backup files, format HDD and put all the data back in

I'm making that 3 times a year, because windows is really kind of operating system, that need it

Just copy all your data to DVD, better twice, for sure. And install windows and all the soft. again, I'm sure it helps...

Try This.....

Set a restore point for "now",then go back to just before "recently',and restore to that point(I really hope you're not one of those folks who think system restore is a resource hog,and has one of the best features of XP turned off)
This will "take you back" to a time when all was right with god and nature, and if it's a software issue causing your grief, then all will be as it should be,once again
If,on the other hand,it's a Hardware problem, and the problem persists after restoring,I'm baffled(baffling me is not a difficult thing to do,so hopefully, someone with the RIGHT answer to your question will respond soon, just to make me look bad)
Give it a shot anyway--it has bailed my a$$ out more than once.

Hi, "I'm making that 3 times a year, because windows is really kind of operating system, that need it". No XP doesn't need that at all, I've had various desktops running XP since it first came out with no ill affects.....

you are all very wonderful for being so knowledgable and nice about computer issues. I'm not at my laptop at the moment, but I will attempt all of these fixes, and if the problem persists, i suppose upgrade to a gig of ram. please though, if anyone has any more insights, let me know. Thanks again,

jeff

You can undo it....

You won't lose any documents, but may have to reinstall any software you've installed recently.

Not to worry, though,XP gives you the option to undo a restore point

Hi, guys (sorry my english, that's not my mother language), I read hear about the system restore thing I can tell you from my personal experience, that it's the part of the system, which is very vulnerable to worms, troyans... Many troyans creators use this for storing their stuff there So the first thing when I install XP is, that I adjust the system for best performance (by turning off all the graphic things) , than I set virtual memory on the other swap drive, which contains only that swap file, and last I turn off the system restore... And I realy want to see the man, who will tell me, that WinXP system restore feature is absolutely safe I think not even Bill Gates could do that

And about reinstalling system? You are talking here about it, like it is a big deal It takes 1-2hours. 30min. to backup all your stuff, 1hour 30mins to reformat, install it all new, than all your stuff copy back on HDD, that's it.

And about reinstalling it couple of times per year. I can tell you, if you are just writing in word and surfing the net, probably you will not need it at all. But if you are kind of a developer, you have some apache or other servers runnig, with PHP, and databases not just one, and some JAVA developing tools, and graphic tools, and ... You will experience, that the system directory is all the time bigger and bigger, not just because you install new things, it remain big if you uninstall all the things out, in system registry is bad, unvalid entries, you find some process in background, which remain after you uninstall it People who knows, what I'm talking about probably use Linux but I need windows because I use some tools, which runs only in windows
