The review will be piece by piece, as things happen...lol

Alienware Aurora m7700

Specs
Blue AMD 17" Wide UXGA 1920x1200 w/ Cam LCD
AMD 64 2x 4400+ Dual Core
2x80GB 7200 rpm sata raid 0
2 gb pc3200 ram
Internal wireless card
NVIDIA 78oo GTX go 256mb
XP Pro sp2
Odyssey Backpack

Phases
They suck, but its part of life and trying not to think about it helps. But checking it every 30 minutes doesnt help (ok, maybe every 35 is ok..) But i had no problem with the finance dept, expect they asked me a ton of questions about where i lived and stuff, going back many years. But my ship date got pushed back a couple days because I changed to the 7800 GTX. Not a big deal. But mainly painless and they were always helpful when i called.

Initial Opening and Paper Work
I recieved my alienware yesterday, but due to having a recruit for baseball and shit with the team i was unable to do anything other than take it out of the box. It did look so beautiful, and BIG. This was after fedex not delivering it on Friday or Saturday! But that was not alienware's fault. The box was so well packed and there didnt seem to be any physical damage, like others have experienced. So i took this as a very good thing. Before i even turn the lappy on I read the paper work. Just making sure everything is in order and stuff, kindof a precautionary thing to do. But i noticed on the invoice there was an error!!! They put in two 24x10x24 CD-RW/8x DVD combo drives!!! This is unacceptable. I am on the phone with them right now and they dont know why it has occured. So much for checking the lappy over before it leaves the depot. The guy told me he is going to see if they will send me the 8x dual layer dvd drive or i have to send the lappy in. Hopefully if they send me the drive it wont be hard to replace.
Update: I am still on the phone with the alienware people and he is going to send me the dual layer drive, he said it is simple to replace...Lets hope so. Maybe one of you guys can help me

Looks
It looks beautiful! I mean it is thick, about 6 inches if I'm not mistaken, and probably around 15lbs, but hey at least if I walk with it I wont have to go to the gym that day. Seriously though it doesnt seem that bad to carry or move around here and there. The weight is very balanced which makes it a lot easier. It has a very solid feel, unlike my other lapy (Dell).

sorry for the long delay. Baseball started, turned 21 in Jan 20th and a ton of crap at school...

Glad to be back and now onto the lappy.

I got the DVD burner installed, which was so easy, special thanks to hulioni with pics and info. That really helped a ton as the guy from alienware i was talking to had no idea on how to describe anything. It works perfectly now.

The only thing about this computer is it gets HOT when im playing FEAR. BUt it runs perfectly. Games look amazing especially with this screen. I used the camera the other day and it is a nice feature, especially since I will be going aboard for a month this summer, can stay in touch with the woman. That could be a bad thing too.

Battery life is nothing special but i always have it pluged in, so its not an issue. I wanted a desktop replacement, and that is what i got, actually i got more than that.

The color is such a dark rich blue and looks so sharp. I never want to touch it, wanna keep it nice and CLEAN.

Im a little hesitant to use the alienwareGUIse because i have heard of people have some problems with it. So maybe in the next couple of days Ill give it a go.

Speakers a the best i have had on any lappy, not saying much since ive had a Dell and Apple. I dont use them much as i have it hooked up to a 5.1 sound system which is awesome.

On the benchmark tests that alienware did, 3DMark 2005:
Game Tests:
- 3DMark Score: 6,204.00 3DMarks
- GT1 - Return To Proxycon: 28.95 FPS
- GT2 - Firefly Forest: 17.87 FPS
- GT3 - Canyon Flight: 29.53 FPS
CPU Tests
- CPU Score: 5,013.00 CPUMarks
- CPU Test 1: 2.42 FPS
- CPU Test 2: 4.61 FPS

Not sure if thats good. Any insight would be appreciated.

Just uploaded all my music which took a while but was needed.

The only problem I have is with my wireless connection. It has nothing to do with the card or the computer, but i've been getting a limited connectivity notice. It shows excellent signal and I have 2 other lappys using the connection with no problems. But i cant seem to get it to work. Any help with that would help a lot.

Thanks guys

Overall: I LOVE THIS LAPPY!!! It is the best thing ever! You must get one ASAP!!! And my experience with alienware has been very pleasant and i would def recommend alienware to anyone. I will be getting my next computer from them as well. Happy gaming...

It is very easy to remove the drives lilitaly. Flip it over and remove the panel with the windows xp key sticker on it. In one corner you will see one silver screw towards the back of the cd drives. Remove this one screw then just push the drives out with your finger or something else if your fingers won't fit in there. It maybe takes 2-3 minutes if you are taking your time. Glad they are making right to fix your problem. One question for you, does your audio dj function with those drives (maybe the problem is just with the DVD burners used)?

Sweet, very nice laptop and congrats.

Yeah, I was reading through there and saw 6inches thick and started laughing

Congrats lilitaly! It's been a long wait, but I tihnk it's been more than worth it. Sorry to hear about the drive issue, but it is a VERY easy replacement. Hulioni has already helped you out with the procedure.

As I noted in my review, I'm also amazed by the machine's balance. Because of the superb blalance, there's no tendency for the computer to shift or have its heft suddenly tear itself out of your hands if you are somewhat off-balance when moving it.

The most difficult transport issue for me is when I first try to fit it into the Odyssey's backpack sleeve. Once you get it lined up, it's easy, but the lining up is a bit tricky. Even with the power "cinder block", Ozma headphones, travel stand, and other assorted stuff, I really thought it would be a bear to handle and move around, but it's not. What a nice surprise!

I've had a chance to take mine to work and I continue to configure it. The more I use it, the more I love it. It's very exciting to play a video, do a database query, defrag the disk, and a whole slew of other stuff (photoshop, dreamweaver, remote desktop operations)--all simultaneously--and ne'er a hiccup. Unbelievable, and exactly what I was shooting for with this rig.

I think I just found out my problem with the substandard internal audio (especially the bass). Alienware posted a support article in which they recommend placing the RealTek Soundman EQ to "Powerful". Additional shaping with WMP's EQ and TrueBass has improved the sound quality markedly for me, especially through the headphones. My kids are asleep, so I have yet to try it hooked up via line out to the stereo using this new setting, but I'll try that tomorrow.

BTW, I think the Alienware Darkstar theme is da bomb!

ahhh Limited or no Connectivity
well lucky for you i work at Comcast Online Tech support, and my job is to get customers back online with their internet. And i get alot of Limited or no connectivity problems.

Limited or no connectivity come from a bug in Windows XP service pack 2.

If you are using a wireless connection and you get a limited or no connectivity error, then you have the wrong WEP KEY for your wireless router is wrong.

If you are getting limited or no connectivity while using an ethernet cord, you will need to uninstall your network card from Device Manager, then restart your computer. If after restarting you computer you still get the limited or no connecitivity error, click on START, click on RUN, type CMD, press OK. That should bring up the command prompt. Now type (netsh winsock reset), and it should ask you to restart your computer. Restart your computer and your problem should be fixed.

If you still get the same problem, unplug the power to your modem and plug it back in; that also fixes limited or no connectivity.

If you still have the same problem, post a reply.

so if i forgot my WEP password, how can I figure it out or find it out again?
it is usually the word "password" unless you changed it. Or it may be "admin" by default. Try those, GL!
well if you own the wireless router, then you should have the WEP Key, or password. If you don't call the guys that makes your wireless router.

If the wireless router is someone else's, then ask them for the WEP Key, or password.
