Dell E1705 Reviews! - Page 2

I should be getting my 9400 today or tomorrow, and I'll try to give my initial impressions of it. I'm not overly technical, but have built PC's myself and have a general knowledge of hardware. You won't get a professional review from me, but I'll do my best!

As for formatting/reinstalling, I won't be able to do that right away. Dell emailed me saying that in accordance with Microsoft restrictions, they are no longer allowed to send out OS cd's. Sounds like a load of crap to me and I'm going to argue it, but I may have to wait on it a while. I'll post pictures as well (though I'm guessing it will look a lot like the 9300!).

You have to pay the $10 to get it ... I did that and it should be delivered with my 9400.

Call and argue with them!

Hey, does anyone here know whether the go7800 in i9400 can be upgraded to go7800gtx just like i9300? I m curious...

answer from DELL is no - power issues (GTX uses the 130 watt adaptor, and 9-cell battery), and the chassis won't take it - not to mention the heat-sink.

But of course, Dell have been proven wrong in the past...by enterprising individuals... just look at the thread on putting a GTX inside a 9300

I'd say you're more likely to be able to by an upgrade to the GeForce 8800 Go in a year from Dell...

Well, your CPU score is way better than my desktop @ the office (P4 3Ghz). Your GPU score almost equals my 6600GT SLI setup at home (AMD 3500+). For me this is enough to last me a while.
Wow, those CPU scores are great, looks like 3DMark06 is multi-threaded. Guys, I was wondering if you have any read outs on the maximum temp that these cards get? Not just in 3DMark but maybe also some high end games like FEAR. Thanks .

P.S.- Yes, while those speeds are still within the realm of GDDR1 (sorry, typo in my first post), the RAM on this card is evidently low clocked GDDR3, which is good because it will run cooler

And this is why I canceled my E1705 order for the M170.

Is there any chance of a review coming from one of the new i9400 owners. I'm currently looking for a notebook and will most likely get the i9400 but it would be nice to read a review from someone who has had some quality time with the machine.

Thanks.

My i9400 just came in and in the few minutes I've played with it I'm very very happy with it.

A quick 3DMark06 on the completely stock machine gives me 2207 3DMarks, with a CPU score of 1810!

I will clean up the XP Home partition and create a new XP Pro one for work. Once that's all done I can post a review. Now would be too soon as I've only played with it vor a very short time.

But my first impression is very positive! I love the screen and the machine is soooo fast!

Yay! which model screen did you get? if it doesnt say on your packing list, running powerstrip would tell you.
You guys know that detect optimal always underestimates the ram right? On my 6800 go it tells me my optimal ram setting is around 720 but It can go as high as 820 before it fails the internal test. It may not be the optimal setting but upping my ram from 720-800 gave me about a 200 point boost in 3dmark05.

Well, I don't see any point in doing a review on the 9400. To be perfectly honest, I just received mine today, and other than the obvious changes (7800 go, etc.), this laptop is really no different from the 9300. I must say though, whatever issues Dell had with keyboard flex on the older models, I don't sense that on this laptop at all! Feels very tactile and don't feel any flex! Nice! I got the Samsung screen, so I'm happy with that. A little bit of light leakage at the bottom, and I can slightly see the coating on the screen, but I am ok with both. Certainly won't be complaining about it. Now, if I can just get them to send me the OS cd.....
