Sager's response to 5720 headphone problem - Page 2

The problem with the 5720 is that there is not ENOUGH power amping the sound. Mine sounds flat; low-quality sound. Rumbling bass. Kind of like a cheap alarm clock-radio. I spoke with Alan from Sager, and his "hypothisis" was that the pentium m chip had to make a sacrafice with it's power becouse of the needy gpu and monitor. My solution is a pair of usb headphones by logitech or LTB or even Sennheiser. The Logitech's reviews are flawless and are only 40.00. The great thing about these are that you don't have to use your PCMCIA slot for sound (although the soudblaster card is great). No matter what laptop you have, a pair of powered usb headphones will ALWAYS sound better. The only drawback is if you hook the 5720 directly to your sound system. You would definately want the soundblaster then.

me thinks there needs to be some small driver fix for the realtek audio interface so that when you choose to remap, it turns internal speakers off. Then you wont have to worry about trying to fix the Overamplified port.

Wish there was some way of measuring the amount of hiss...I've had my 9750 for a couple of days, and didn't notice the hiss until a few minutes ago I held my headphone against my ear and plugged and unplugged the headphones from the jack - otherwise I would've never noticed it from mine...until I bought some better headphones than these $10 ones I've got anyway. It doesn't sound like it's near as loud as the ones I'm hearing you guys talk about though...

That's the weird thing. I've tried about a dozen pairs of headphones from cheap to high-end, and they all produced noticable hiss above any other notebook computer, but some pairs were more evident than others. In general, the nicer headphones had the worse hiss.

I've got some audio professionals trying to get some devices for me to measure the audio.

It seems that sager has made a great effort and a reasonable resolution for your case.

Read all the pass history of sager find me another clevo reseller that goes out of their way working with clevo to solve as much issues as possible.

Clevo designed and manufactured these units, if clevo can't provide sager a fix what can they do? a least they do go out of their way for their customers.

Again I have never seen any other clevo reseller do this, while others do take credit of sager as their own….

Plus with all the extra functions packed into these Clevo designed units vs. any other I would be more shocked if it has no minor annoying issues at all.

You've GOT to be kidding. This is OK to you? You've got a bright future ahead in notebook reselling

Let me ask you this: You go down to your local car dealer and buy you a brand new car. A few days into it, the horn sticks. You take it back to get fixed. Dealer doesn't know what the deal is because they didn't make it. They call up the car mfg. and do a bit of troubleshooting for you, but the car mfg. doesn't admit there's a problem- That's Just The Way It Is. Well, isn't that dandy? At least the dealer tried to help. That's what's important, isn't it?

Thanks for proving part of my point!

How can the dealer fix your horn stickiness or maybe worst, you can’t shift out of 3rd gear. If the manufacture don’t issue a fix for the dealer to take action? What can they do? Will they let you return the car? Or will they tell you keep driving it but don’t press the horn so it doesn’t get stuck until the mfg. sends us a fix action notice.

I have taken my G35 to my dealer 6 times now for a break scorching noise and all they tell me is everyone is having this issue on the 05 model it’s the sports break system and the main office has not come up with anything yet so just drive it as is and press on the break harder…… then you won’t hear the noise…..

Sager has tried here, sager has offer to refund his unit (something the car dealer won’t do). What else can they do?

OH yeah... i had two other issues with my G35, which my dealership wouldn't fix it their reason was IT's not that big of a deal... this is one of the major dealer ship in my area. i had to drive 70 miles out of my way for a differnet dealer to do these service for me.

But the difference with the car example is that the manufacturer will still try to solve the problem, and will certainly avoid it in the future.

Clevo's has a history of this audio problem, but they have done nothing to fix it.

I agree. After SEEING the surround capabilities when I recieved my 5720, I was pumped. I've never seen a subwoofer and rear speaker output on any laptop before. Then HEARING the weak output of the device, I was extremely let down. In order to hear the music, you have to jack up all the gain controls, and in turn, you hear all the impurities in the background. If there was more power amping the sound, you would hear better bass and less hiss. The positive thing about this situation, in my opinion, is that now that there is 5.1 surround usb headphones (LTB, Tritton, etc.) on the market that sound great, I wouldn't use the on-board sound anyway. Hopefully, Sager will address this issue and make a PERFECT notebook. the weak sound output is the 5720's only flaw that I've found with mine.

the sound sucks, but what does that have to do with cars?

Im really confused....I know cars make sounds, and they have stereos that make sounds, and they have electronics so they must be just like laptops?

My new Audigy 2 zs notebook, solved all my problems with the crappy internal sound...People get over with it , there's no other solution to this BS ,people make mistakes ,it cant be always perfect when designing something....To bad there's not yet some pcmcia Creative X-Fi i would have got that also....

hahaha!! Well, this audio problem is FAR FROM perfect. I can totally understand and accept WEAK sound from laptop audio... but the hiss problem takes this case out of the standard deviation of component abnormalities and makes it an outlier. Its a major problem that shouldnt be found on a 2k+ problem ... but its an evil that must be accepted if you choose to use this laptop.

I hope im not generalizing too much, but if people can afford the initial payment of a 5720... then a ~$60 fix shouldn't be much of a problem. Also, the 5720 is the cream of the crop ... its got the screen, video, processor ... why WOULDNT someone complete the package and purchase an audigy card whether the sound had problems or not... that was my consideration before i even heard of these hissing problems.

I found out what my problem was, MY HEADPHONES SUCKED! They got messed up somehow and THEY sound like crap. I hooked up some external speakers and my 5720 ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT ROCKS I TELL YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After all my bitching, it was my stupid headphones.

I have a perfect machine. Thank you Sager and Powernotebooks.com.

sorry Freaky, but thats the same for everyone....all headphones will suck on it.

Just my two (euro)cents

My 5720 has the same problem: the headphone output is way too loud and sounds not good. The reason for it seems to be some kind of loudness/wide-angle effect which is applied to the internal speakers and to the headphone output and cannot been disabled. You can easily tell the difference by plugging the jack into a line-out mapped port. The output of that ports is too low-powered to drive a decent headphone, but if I connect my stereo amplifier to it, the sound is almost exactly the same quality as if it comes out of a $400 M-Audio FireWire audio device.

Before buying my 5720 I owned a Clevo 4600 type notebook, and it had a similar problem -- with the difference that I was able to switch the wide stereo effect off. Besides that it was a lot more noisy than the 5720, and I had to use an additional audio device all the time, and I had to cut off the ground wire inside the power supply to make it hum-and-noise-free.

Anyway, the Realtek ALC880D seems to be a way better sound chip than that built into my old notebook. I just have to stay away from using headphones with the 5720, which is no big problem for me as I like to listen to movie & game audio through half a dozen JBL's rather than putting phones to my ears...

I have the big hiss problem on my 5320 as well . . . for the moment I am dealing with it, but I won't for much longer.

Notebook sound and integrated sound in general has never impressed me. I will be getting a PCMCIA sound card when possible. I would like to get the Audigy 2 ZS, but since Creative launched the X-Fi, I hopefully await a PC Card version of that.

Maybe on yours, Doc. My headphones were BLOWN! They sound like crap on everything I plug them into. I plugged in some little Sony Earbuds and they sound pretty good after I turned down the gain in the Realtek control panel.
Also, my cheap little Jensen powered external speakers sound better than they ever have. I am a believer!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My 5720 ROCKS!!!!

Well maybe i overreacted a little by saying "perfect"...I ment to say it's hard to make a laptop with everything being exelent inside (well yeah they really ****ed up the audio) ,but like u said 5720 it's a nice lappy for a great price...Yeah i gave 2.2K for it and why wouldnt i give another 90$ for an audigy card that completes my quest for a perfect gaming machine on the go!!
