Reformatted and missing sound? read here

I posted this in another thread, but I see in other threads that people are having trouble reinstalling their audio driver/sound, so I'll just repost it here.

Just got done finishing up doing most of the driver reinstalling, except I couldnt find an audio driver anywhere! 9400 isnt listed on the resource CD and it's not on the driver support site either. I called up Dell tech support, and he didnt know where to get it either He actually seemed surprised that I reformatted my computer. "Let me get this straight...It's a new computer and you reformatted it???"

Then he suggested that I use the restore partition to restore to factory defaults. I told him that if i wanted factory defaults, i wouldnt have reformatted!

So anyways, he ended up finding the audio drivers for it, after a short wait. He said to install the Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD audio Rev: A02 drivers listed for the MXC051.

That seems to have done the trick and my audio works again now.

excellent! thank you. were the drivers actually on the resource CD somewhere?

Yes, just the resource CD doesnt have the Inspiron 9400 listed as a model -_- so it can be confusing which driver is the correct one.

If i had not called up dell tech support, I would have guessed the 9300's audio driver (which is incorrect).

Are the other drivers and stuff pretty simple to install?

I've formatted PC's before but never a laptop. Oh well, should be the same, as long as all the drivers and programs are present I don't really care.

yes it's similar to reformatting a pc. all the drivers are on dell's 9400 drivers page (other than audio)

did you buy an OEM MS Office with your Dell?
Did it come with the cd?
If not, how will you get it back?

thx

Ah good! Maybe they did it because of me! hehe! The Tech support person was surprised that he couldnt find them on the site either.

Do we need all the drivers? Is this the one that comes with the bloatware?
Dell QuickSet

Sonic Solutions DigitalMedia v7
http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=141506

Also, how would I know which is the right chipset driver (unless you have to install both)? And do you have to install all the video card ones?

Also, when I reformat, will I have to install the Dell Inspiron 9400/E1705 System BIOS onto my computer before I can install Windows? Because I'll need a floppy disk for that, and I didn't choose one with my laptop.

I dont think reformatting affects the bios that is already on your system. Even if it did, you dont need a floppy to flash it.

You dont need quickset (I put it back on tho, for the shortcut keys). I dont know what the sonic stuff is, I assume that's the sonic dvd burning stuff/media viewers etc that came with the computer. Whatever it is, you dont need it, and you can probably find better (such as Nero).

You dont have to install all those video drivers. I actually didnt install a video driver from that list yet, because I am not sure which one to install and dont see my model listed there, and the lcd works perfectly so far without it. If you do find out which video driver to install, i'd like to know, though

You install both chipset drivers (the ricoh is for the cardreader).
