Hey All,
Just wondering if anyone has heard when 100 GIG 7200 RPM Perpendicular recording hard drives will be available ???

I am looking to upgrade from my current Hitachi 60 gig 7200 RPM one !!!

Should be a nice speed boost......especially for graphics & photo editing stuff!!

Thanks...shkj

Heck 100 gig 7200 drives are already out. I'm waiting on a 160 gig 7200 drive.

Not perpendicular versions but the regular 100 gigs just to make that clear.

When perpendicular drives are available, you will see them in the Terabyte and higher size - and that's no kidding. It's not a wet dream, they are going to happen.

This was brought up last week and no.. they will not be released right away in terabyte sized drives! The Seagate Momentus 5400.3 Perpendicular drives will be 40, 60, 80 120 and 160Gigs in size and available in both ATA or SATA interfaces. is always your friend.

The first mobile perpendicular drives are 160's. I doubt we'll see terabyte drives in laptops soon. Especially considering how expensive the 160 is right now. The sites that had them listed where over MSRP from what I understand and where well over 300 dollars.

There any performance difference? I know they have better capacity.

yeah, I thought both were the same speed?...

just thought of something else that can be a concern

I was just wondering do you know if the 137gig hard drive limit (48 bit LBA) is going to be an issue when upgrading hard drives larger than that in the Inspiron 9300....???

I believe that this was resovled by MS when they released a service pack.

It was resolved with Service Pack 1

wont they have to redefien a "gigabyte" with this new technology...

No, because a byte will remain 8 bits, a kilo byte will remain 1024 Bytes, a megabyte will still be 1024 Kilo Bytes, and a gigabyte will still remain 1024 Megabytes.

Course, HDD companys say it's 1,000,000,000 bytes, which cuts down on actual hard drive capacity.

The 147GB HD (2.5") from Fujitsu should be coming out this year. It's a perpendicular drive and has a speed of 10,000 RPM.
