I'm joining your ranks. Really out of pure curiosity if nothing else.

I sold my notebook PC (on a semi-whim) and bought a year old 14" iBook at 1.33 MHz, 512 ram, 60 GB...I paid 880 for it (did I get ripped off)?

I'm kind of wondering what I'm getting myself into. The last time I used an Apple computer it was the original mac and I was rather young.

Any suggestions for the Mac newbie? Should I upgrade to Tiger? (Unfortunately) it only came with Panther.

Thanks for any help.

880 doesn't sound too bad for a year old 14, but for just a little more you could've gotten a new 12.

Anyway...I recommend upgrading to Tiger as there are new enhancements that make it better than Panther.

As far as other suggestions check here: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=66548

Thanks for the cool guide. I didn't know os x was unix based. That's cool, I have a good smidge of linux experience so that may help some.

About upgrading to Tiger. I noticed some one ebay that are selling for 49 + 10 shipping (here).

Would that work for me? It says its "for the newest models of G4 ibooks" which I know I have a g4 ibook but (obviously) it didn't ship with Tiger and its not the "newest".

You're welcome.

Tiger can be installed on pretty much every Mac. Yours will handle it quite well, but I'd upgrade the memory. If I remember correctly your iBook came with 256 standard, and you can add a 1gig chip to bring it up to 1.25 gigs which will be perfect.

I have 512...I'd love to upgrade with a gig stick, but $$$ issues prevail.

I know Tiger will run on my iBook, I just didn't know if those discs would install on my comp since they appear to be restore discs that go to a later iBook than the one I bought.

Again, thanks for all your advice and help.

That's what I get for not reading things...you're right, they are restore disks. I just came back to say something about it.

I don't think they'll work on your computer, however, you can order Tiger for 69 dollars through the educational store on the apple website. If you're not a student it's technically illegal, but as far as I know they don't verify student status.

Aside from that Amazon usually has deals.

Ah, okay thanks once more.

I am a student so at least I'm technically okay.

yet another question...does that edu-discounted Tiger come with iLife?
Nope. Tiger and iLife are sold separately, however the educational discount gets iLife down to 49.

Of course, there are always place to "acquire" both of them. None of which I know of, of course.
Well, after the educational discount, iLife went down to $59. Are you sure it was $49 for you?

I never ordered it, but I could've sworn it was 49. I'm probably wrong, however, if Apple says it's 59 currently.
