Help!!! Computer freezes HPze4600

Thread Starter
with AMD Athlon. My Laptop will freeze when I'm working on it and it is running off the battery (unpluged). When I say freeze I mean I have to hold down the power button and restart to get it going again. ctrl/alt/del doesnt work cursor wont move, just the screen that I was working on. I might be working on it 2 minutes or 20 minutes, full charge or partial charge- it will freeze at any time. No correlation to softare or applications. Does anyone have any advice this is driving me crazy. As far as I know it has been doing this for a while. Possibly may have started when I installed SP2.
Thanks in advance,

I'll ask the obvious; Have you checked for spyware and/or viruses?

Did you install the correct version of SP2 that is appropriate for your edition of the OS?

There are known issues with installing, for example Enterprise edition of SP2 on Home edition OS.

Would it be that much trouble if you reinstalled the OS, and start from scratch?

I've got a 4420, already tried a complete reinstall.
The problem re-appeared even before the new build was complete!
This is one of the few issues that's really starting to frustrate me!

INFO:
HP 4420ze-US
WinXP Prof (sp2 slipstreamed)
1GB Ram

When running on battery with ANY pcmcia (pc card) the notebook freezes completely, no entries in event log. No warning.

Can you boot into BIOS an check for IRQ conflict?

Already checked, everything in there looks good. I'm leaning towards something w/ the power settings since it happens very consistently about 3-5 minutes after the AC power is unplugged.

I suppose the next rational approach is to exempt the PCMCIA devices from being power-managed. (just not sure if I have the patience to go through um-teen lock-ups while trying to find the right one!!!)

Two questions, that might help.

1) Did you install the "Intel Chipset Installation Utility" s/w?

2) In Device Manager, what shows under "PCMCIA and Flash Memory Adapters"?

Intermittent freezes can make you crazy, and are usually extemely difficult to cure. Recently there have been several people who have posted about the same problem - myself included.

In my case, I tried spyware/virus scans, stopped unnecessary processes, uninstalled programs one by one, ran MemTest, ran an hdd test, reformatted and reinstalled Windows - nothing worked. Frustrated, I called Tech Support and was all set to return my desktop to the factory for repair, but at the last minute, ran a registry repair program which finally corrected the problem.

I hope your issue is solved more easily.

I used TweakNow RegCleaner Professional. A free evaluation period is allowed and IMHO, is worth a try. Good luck.
