Faint High Pitched LCD Noise

Thread Starter
My 5680 UXGA screen is now making a very faint (but annoyingly noticable)high-pitched constant noise when on (it stops when off). Obviously power related noise but why? Is it normal and I was just sensitive to it or is it a problem? Anyone else have this noise?

Soma

PS
I have the modular extra battery and 7200RPM HDD + DVDRW if that helps to solve the problem running XP pro with latest drivers.

It is the inverter for the LCD backlight you can hear.
You must have very good hearing to be able to hear it as it is normally above 20kHz.

However there might be something not quite right with it as power inverters tend to whine when under excessive load or when components are not in spec.

I would email Sager to check with them, but it definitely sounds like the inverter. One test you might do is to start the machine up then once running set your power management so that nothing happens when you close the lid. Then press the little button that tells the laptop the lid is closed. That should turn off the LCD and backlight inverter. If the noise goes away it is definitely the inverter.

It's one of two things.
1. inverter for the backlight
2. the backlight tube itself (like a really tiny florescent lamp)

Its not uncommon for them to make noise. Unless it fails I don't think Sager will replace it but you can always ask. Depending on how load and annoying it is might help your cause. You could try changing the refresh rate to a higher or lower frequency that might help a little.
