TOSHIBA M40 - 282 (1024 MB Ram)

Hi! I'm new on this forum. I want to buy my first notebook but I don't know what I should buy.

I have look Toshiba m40-282 (but with 1024 MB ram). Anyone has this nb?

Do you have a review on this nb?

How many hours last the battery? (2? 3?) Autonomy is important for me.

I will use this nb for many purposes: from gaming to matlab, simulink and various finite element code.

Im not familiar with the specs of that version of the M40. Do you have any more info (sorry I'm in a bit of a hurry to look for them myself).

Quickly, for gaming make sure it has a dedicated video card (not the intel or ATI integrated ones). Depending on the game, you'll want to make sure it's one of the M40's that has a NVIDIA 6600 or a ATI x700 to insure adequate performance. If the games are not high fps 3d intense games you could probaby get by comfortabley with an ATI x600.

For Matlab (and also gaming) make sure it has Pentium M and not a celeron. you may even be better off waiting another few weeks for the new DUO's to come out. The dual processor witll help with teh Matlab stuff and they should be coming with even better GPU's.

This laptop (customized with 1024 MB ram ) seems ok for my use but I need more autonomy. Another laptop that could be suitable for me is acer aspire 5514 wlmi that has battery life in the 3.5 hour range! What do you think about it?

Is Toshiba M40-282 better than Acer 5514 wlmi? thanx!

I can't help you much as I'm not familiar with Acer laptops. I just know that I do not like those curved keyboards that they use on some of their laptops (I'm not sure oif htis one has one or not) and those slot loading drives also bug me. I've lent several DVD's to a friend with a MAC that also has a slot loading drive and she always returns them scratched (but they do look cool!). The only other difference I can see is that the Toshiba uses SATA hard Drives (IIRC) while the Acer uses pata. In the end it won't make any difference in a laptop though. Other than that, the laptos seem pretty similar.

Are you aware that Toshiba also offers a 12 cell battery fro the M40? It's kind of pricey (like $200) but shuld last about twice as long as teh regular battery. Downsides are that it sticks out of the back quite a bit and adds some weight

the toshiba will have better build quality and in my opinion a nicer screen but otherwise they would in sheer specs be roughly compairable

TOSHIBA M40 - 282 (1024 MB Ram)
pushing 3hrs with brightness set lowest and wireless turned off... for typical useage on a brand new system expect at least 2:40hrs...and battery life goes down a bit after a year.
The 12 cell battery is basically 2-in-1, in practice u should expect around 5 hrs with this, which is not worth it IMHO.

12 cells battery is good but what notebook mount this? Acer? I know that Acer has battery life in the 3.5 hour range, 1 hour plus than toshiba satellite m40-282

thats the toshiba, they offer an extended battery for it as well.... besides you wont like using it with wireless off and everything turned down
