i am looking to get some photo-editing software. i was curious about the difference between photoshop 7.0 and the new 4.0, or if i should just get cs2. any suggestions? pros/cons? is there anytihng better than adobe for this kind of thing?

Photoshop 7 is like 3 years old and photoshop 4 is like 10 years old. Unless you mean Photoshop Elements 4, but I think that's still on version 3.

CS2 is the newest version of Photoshop.

I thought elements was the low end photo shop?
CS2 is the best and there's other good things about it too, but I can't post those here...

Elements is the "consumer" version of Photoshop. If you don't need to do any extensive photo editing/manipulation then Elements is great. Otherwise you'll want Photoshop.

Elements is a consumer version of Photoshop, it is not as powerful as the full Photoshop.

I use Photoshop and like its features. You can also try alternative software like Corel Draw X3 which includes Corel Draw (like Illustrator) and Photopaint (like Photoshop) which also has real powerful features and can read and create files in other formats including Photoshop. It is cheaper too btw.

You can check it out here you can also download a fully working trial version to check it out and see if you like it.

Edit: fixed link.

Elements 4.0 is quite useful. Its feature set is 60% of PS full version and that's more than plenty for quite a few folks. You could certainly try 4.0 and upgrade if you find it is not enough. Give Adobe a call or email on that one, they make that offer from time to time.

Hands down CS2 is the best...Photoshop 7.0 had an issue with alpha channels.. CS2 has some features like warp for stretching a picture thats to small to fit a template..and alot of other things to many to name. However if you are just trying it out to see if you like these kinds of programs, I'd highly recommend The Gimp http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html very powerful software and in my opinion better then paintshop pro..and the best part..its 100% free

I still have Photoshop Elements 2.0, and I LOVE it.

Yarr, there's an easy pirate answer to all of this.

Go with CS2 but if you want to save some money go with CS. CS2 is overall way better with CS but CS will give you alot of helpfull tools.

If you're looking for something simple and don't need 16-bit color or CMYK, try GIMP. I use it for just about everything, including web site graphics. It just doesn't have support for 16 bit color or CMYK.

Comes to this: try it, if it's missing something that you need, go get Photoshop.
