If you buy a i9300, do not get the low-res screen at this time

Just a word of warning, if you order a i9300, do not get the low-res, non-glossy screen at this time.

I got two machines both with bad backlight bleeding and they just issued me a full money-back refund because tech support "does not expect replacements to be any better". Plus, my phone sessions with them were a real mess.

Don't understand me wrong, I loved the 9300 overall, I really did, great machine. But the backlight bleeding was so bad watching Star Trek looked like the Enterprise is parked on a beach.

I do not have data about the high-res, glossy display. I might order one but first need to calm down.

Here are both that I got in comparision, the left one (the worse one) is the replacement:

Why is it so hard to manufacture a decent quality display????

I assure you this is how they looked in reality.

If you look at the upper part of the screens in my photo you will see that the text appears normal crisp white on black, and that the background is actually black. If I had deliberately overexposed the photo then the background in the upper part would look washed out.

In any case, Dell looked at them and agreed that these are not acceptable and they recommended to me that I order the truebrite screen instead. I'm just passing on this recommendation.

Hey, those photos are overexposed...

Although even when compensating for the overexposure those screens do have quite bad light leakage (unlike most of the photos shown by people here) and to be honest should be exchanged, glad that they have.

Though I'm glad from your sample of two screens that you can tell that the other 10,000 or so screens in the same batch are also bad, good call (sarcasm)...

OK, I'm telling for the last time:

Dell told me that I should get a refund, because replacements for the low res-screen would likely not be any better at this time.

Their words, not mine.

Now do with this warning what you want, it's not that I gain anything here. On the contrary, I would have loved to keep the i9300 with the low-res screen if it wasn't for this problem.

The WUXGA is not better.

There should be a disclaimer for 9300s and XPSs: Warning: Crappy ass LCD.

They CAN make them well (check out the Sonys and Fujitsus), just that Dell doesnt use them

My Dell 2200 and B130's LCD kicks the crap out of the 9300 and XPS2/M170. A direct comparison with my dad's 9300 made him want to sell it immediately...

Yeah I think people object to such blanket statements however:

True it is a sample of two but another poster had what 4 in a row & it's certainly not a isolated problem with with either resolution LCD as we've seen over & again. I've heard rumors Dell knows about how common this problem is & obviously doesn't care to resolve it. That's my when nightmare when unloading & booting it up. I've seen it posted about here & other places. Looks like I'll have to put up more coin$ for a reliable screen. Shame really my earlier Dell LCD screens were really great.

So what are you going to get instead Martin?

In that case I will tell you for the last time:

Those pictures are overexposed, but the screens also have quite bad light leakage (just exagerated by the overexposure) which if you are not happy with then you should get a replcement...

Since you are not happy with the current screens then there is obviously no point in sending you replacements that are the same. Many others however are / will not be, as picky (not that you shouldn't be, we have all heard many times that since people have paid X amount of money for their laptop Dell should be bending over and...).

So... Yes, they do have light leakage. Yes, it is right that Dell are sending you replacements. But hey, those pictures are over exposed...

EDIT: Ment refund, not replacement...

I got the samsung WUXGA with 0 light leakage! Had very little at the bottom, after a week, it is non existant! I love my lappy! It sucks that they cant be consistant though.

Don't slap me but most likely I get a used i9300.

I liked the i9300 but I can't solve the problem by getting the WUXGA screen. Apart from the fact that this configuration is no longer sold, there are too many people unhappy with their XUXGA, too, not to mention that don't want any display with more than 100 dpi.

(BTW, I should have put my 2405FPW next to the i9300s in my photo to have a base for comparision but that's snow from yesterday now).

I recently ordered a 9300 with the WXGA+ (after the WUXGA was gone as an option) I hope mine is not this bad
post #13 of 26
At least they're giving you a refund without restocking fees as I've argued such significant light leakage should be considered "defective". Perhaps there's still hope for those willing to take their chances & send back for full refund if such light leakage resides.
Yeah I hear the 2405FPWs are great.

Hey my Inspiron 7000 XGA & 8000 SXGA are flawless but those were a pretty penny. Dell may be cutting corners now.

You would have to see the used I9300 first (from where?) I assume before laying down the$..

My 9300 has the same problem. I haven't decided if I was going to do anything about it; the DVD watching wasn't great but not horrible either. I think I can live with it, especially since I just sold the 1100. If they would offer me an E1705 replacement I would bite.

What do you all think?

Here's what it looks like otherwise: (not as washed out though)

Can you pop in a Star Wars DVD?

Don't have one, any other request?

Well, the question here is (or at least, would be for me), whether the backlight bleeding is disturbing your activity.

I like to watch sci-fi, I use programs which have green text on black background (emacs) etc.

So, whatever you do that has a dark background. If you only watch chick-flicks I see no reason to be unhappy with the screen
