Z70VA X700 256mb??

Hi, I'm new to this forum, but you guys seem to know more than I do about my laptop and so thought to ask the question here.

I recently bought a Z70va laptop from lu computers here in canada (who by the way seems to have the best prices this side of the border) and right away found that my video card adapter info seemed to indicate that it had 256 mb onboard. I updated my video drivers; I have the latest bios, and nothing changed. I can’t seem to find anyone else with this predicament. Has anyone ever seen this? Or did I somehow get lucky and have an extra 128 megs thrown on when my video card was built?

Thanks

First for me, Where are you seeing this?

if I go to the display properties and in the advanced section hit the adapter tab the indicated memory size is 256. when I run the 3dmark05 and hit system details I get the same answer ... as seen here:

What did you score in 3Dmark05 BTW?

so I redid 3dmark05 with everything set to default and got 2655

maybe you somehow enabled hypermemory?

from what I could figure, hypermemory isn't an option on this card.

3dmark will report the right ammount of ram thats for sure. I dont know how you did it but this is out of the ordinary....Then again i havent benched the x700 on z70va since august.... Maybee i missed it but i doubt it. Perhaps in canada they got a shipment of these with 256mb. 2700 in 3dmark is a little above the norm for a non tweaked card.

Well, the Omega drivers DO help just a tad bit

Yea.. I've gotten around 2670 with Omegas on stock settings (128mb x700).

My A6VA with an X700 GPU does have HyperMemory. 128MB Dedicated and 128MB HyperMemory = 256MB.

Well, the BIOS my nptebook came with didnt support HM. I flashed it, installed new drivers and suddenly it was 256MB. BIOS change log said add support for hypermemory.

It is possible...

I got the same laptop end december, also speced with a 128mb x700 with 256mb ram.
This shared memory thing, should i turn it of? What effect will it have on performance, or will ut2k4 run better without?

hypermemory uses a certain percentage of your installed RAM. If you can turn it off, I'd do it. it's not going to be that helpful, and you'll free up some memory for other applications.

googled a bit there but i cant seem to find how to turn it of.
I'd like it off to see if i notice a difference and because i dont think i really need the extra ram for the gpu.

You can only turn it off by installing older drivers that don't support HyperMemory. There is as far as i know, NO other way to disable it.

Ok, I'm going to point out some things and make some comments.

1. I have an x700 128 in my z83v. I recently downloaded the newest Omega Drivers, and suddenly im up to 256 (Hypermemory). I have no idea how this happened, because AFAIK im not supposed to have hypermemory. Odd indeed.

2. Hypermemory, from what i've heard, is NOT a good thing to use. Sure, it gives your videocard a little more memory, but it is not accessed as fast as ACTUAL videocard memory, therefore you may experience a little bit of lagging here or there. If not, then by all means, leave it on.

I'm by no means an expert, feel free to correct me (and/or let me know how to disable it on my card should the need arise... i dont know how to ATM)

One major reason Hypermemory is not that good because it uses your system RAM which is usually a lot slower than the memory used in the video card.
