You didn't look closely enough at the 9200/9300/9400. Magnesium alloy lid and base.

I don't want to give you any negative reps, however some of your statements are simply false, opinion or not. The LCD lid and entire base of the Dell 9200/9300/XPS2/9400 are Magnesium allow.

Say "no" to Sony. (Sony, Phoney, homey, crummy, crumbly, bumbly, bumble bee, crappy, sloppy, soupy, droopy, drippy, Sony)

They also make gorgeous screens - but the rest of the machine sucks. Seriously - a 5400 rpm HD on a "power machine"? Who are they kidding?

naver liked sony's laptops or desktops... always thought they looked "cheap"

I've replaced motherboards and LCDs in 9200s and 9300s (don't reckon anyone in my service territory has a 9400 yet, let alone a broken one). From what I could ascertain of those components they were all plastic. Now they do have Mg reinforcements in the palmrest to help with rigidity, but there wasn't any metal that I could see aside from that thin RF shield.

I've got 2 University campuses (one which practically orders their students to buy Dells) and a large community college in my territory. Means lots of Laptops getting repaired under complete care

I know this has been discussed before and yes the base and the lid are painted to look like plastic but I can assure you they are Magnesium allow on the 9200/9300/9400/XPS2/M170 systems. Next time you get a chance look a little closer, take a razor blade tot he paint and you will find Magnesium.

When you pull the LCD out of a 9200 or 9300, the Mg lid is obvious. The base is less obvious, but it's easy to verify as noted above.

You'll also notice the high thermal conductivity of the Mg lid and base (which helps dissipate component heat), especially on a cold day. It's like working on a cold slab of steel.

Well, in the end I got the dell!
Thanks for the replys everyone
But... Orignaly I orginaly purchased the Sony on the 25th of January but then a few days later dell came out with the core duo. So I posted the question here. With the Shipment of the Sony they said it would be sent out on the Second of this month it never was!! Then the shipdate was changed to Unknown. I called up sony to enquire about the shipdate and they said that they might receive the chips on the 7th and then you have to add the 72 hr. for build time. So if I'm having these problems now, I'd hate to see what type of support I get later on. So I told'em to cancel my order.

I found out my Job had an Employee purchase plan with dell, so I went back to dell website and they had more deals going on then before.

FREE!1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz Weekend Deal
FREE! Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps) Weekend Deal
My employee discounts:
Dell EPP/FSS customers: Save $400 on select Inspiron notebook purchases $1599 or more. - $400.00 off
Dell EPP and FSS Customers: Free ground shipping on select Inspiron systems over $849. $24 handling charge applies. - $25.00 off

So I beefed up my specs abit, added larger Harddrive and Longer lasting battery and still had the total $100 cheaper than the sony price.

So Now I'm waiting for my dell it should be here on monday or tuesday (if the snow does not stop the shipping) So I'm rather happy with my choice!

My only beef with the notebook is it looks so plain jane, I'll just need to do something about that, see about moding some LEDs .Well Thank you all for your input

You did really good. I would never nor have ever purchased a sony. In fact i would rather purchase a toshiba (and did) over a sony anyday. But dells are great computers. My 700m was the best 12 incher on the market (but sadly my friend stole it and left me the money i paid for the darn thing).
So technically the friend didn't steal it? And what a jerk they should've at least asked. haha sorry I couldn't resist being a smarta$$

Actually he came over with his sister and saw it and fell in love with it right there on the spot,,He asked and before i could make up my mind he took it and everything that came with it as well as a logitech notebook mouse i had and even kept all the programs i had in it (the dweeb). He is now paying me each week for it. But i didnt mind because he is a good kid and frankly i have way to mamy laptops and pcs around. Plus i like buying new gear anyway. Right now im waiting for the 17 inch apple to go duo core.

Just dell, even dont think about others

What is interesting is that now that there are alot of DELL E1705's out in the real world one of the top complaints is that the SONY DVD-RW drive Dell uses is junk.
Oh by the way i did purchase the new 17 apple macbookpro. And yes sony makes crappy drives. Plane and simple.

Agreed Sony's DVD-RW drives suck. The Sony DVD-RW drive in my Dell E1705. Is giving me a bunch of issues and doesn't work sometimes at all. Well it is two years old. The rest of the machine is working perfectly after all this time.

the newer Dell E1705/9400 have 7900GS video cards which put the smack down very well.....

my E1705 I just sold to a lucky guy in Canada had one of the best LCDs I have every had in a laptop the LG/philips WUXGA 1920x1200 and it was just amazing, and the viewing angle was insane.....
