should I get the Aurora m7700??!! - Page 3

but only in the 7800 go not gtx, also why go sli when you can probably cut down the room w/ a duel core system...

Oh and Note: if you think a xps will create attention, you're obviously not a previous Alienware owner haha (not that that is a bad thing) but my picture of my alienware on the net snap more necks haha...so alienware+blue paint+amd+glowing alien eyes will definitely turn a lot of heads

DB's hypersonic is amazing, I was in your very shoes a week ago. priced out Dell, Hypersonic, PC torque, and Alienware...after weeks of contemplation I finally pulled the trigger on the Alienware.

My personal experiences w/ their CS is really what brought me back. Tht 9850 can be had for MUCH cheaper as well as the Hypersonic w/out paint, but imho they are just hideous looking w/out paint etc.

I didn't want to try out a new company, and yeah I am "personally" biased toward Alienware (though I try to be as unbiased when members ask for buying suggestions/advice), alienware CS has always taken care of our members and including myself (and it's not b/c i'm a moderator either).

They sent me brochures, shirts, hats for a lan I was attending. Sent me a jacket and some clothes when I was displaced from a fire @ my condo. I can't say enough great things about AW b/c they personally took care of me, but since I'm a moderator of these great forums, I see the great service that they provide our members/future potential customers.

ok I'll get off my soap box now, shazza can I get a glass of water? thanks

lol - yes, young man. You've done good and deserve a glass of water (and remember what happens when you aren't a good boy...).

On a more serious note - I decided on my second AW for the same reasons you mention. AW CS is not perfect, but they do seem to come through in a pinch.

While I agree that Alienware does have some flashy extras, I specifically mentioned the XPS because it has LED lights in every single cooling vent, on the back that can light up the letters "XPS", and a polished metalic 'something' on the back. (note that all of the LED lights have the ability to change into 16 different colors). I think Alienware's flashyness is a bit more subtle. personally I don't mind 'head turners' but with the XPS, I think Dell made a slight overkill. thats just my opinion, feel free to disagree with me. And by the way, this will be my first Alienware (can't wait 'till I make my decision)

P.S. sorry for the first two smiley faces, I have yet to figure out how to delete a post.

I'm in the same boat trying to figure out if the Alienware m7700 is right for what I want. I'm definately a very hard core gamer... it's not the only thing though. Here are the list of things I'm looking into a m7700 for:

1. Gaming first and foremost.
2. Moving it around the house to different rooms to be closer to my kids and wife while I'm on the machine.
3. Taking it on the road when I visit family or go on trips so that I can still game from the hotel room/etc.
4. Taking it to a few classes every other week for Grad school ** this is the one that I'm nervous about. I'm worried that the noise level from these machines might disrupt the ability to use it in class however I've been told on these forums that the noise level isn't really that high? Hopefully not.

The other dilemma I'm faced with is that now that they've come out with the FX-60, should I sacrifice hard drive speed to go with the newer dual core processor? I was going to configure and buy a 4800 with 2 gigs, 7800 gtx, and a single 7200 rpm hd (because I was told that they speed diff from a raid 0 vs a single drive wasn't that great). Now with the new chip I'm wondering if I should further downgrade the HD to a 5400 rpm to get the better chip or if that would be too much of a performance hit. I'm trying to keep it at 4500 bucks, but it's really hard trying to balance that with my gaming needs.

I'd also like to add the following:

Computer hardware has now definately gotten the jump on gaming software demands. My current desktop is 2 years old and pushes only 2500 3dmark05 scores, but it is still able to comfortably run even FEAR and the newest games coming out. Sure...I might not be able to have them maxed out, but I have most of the details turned on and the computer is 2 years old.

The m7700 at the top end is pulling almost 7000 3dmark05 scores. These machines should last you 2 to 3 years with the games that are coming out. Quite frankly the hardware these days is finally outpacing or at least keeping up with the demands of software being produced in my opinion. In other words -- you should be fine with a machine of that power for the next several years. The issue is that it will be more difficult to piecemeal upgrade once those 3 years are up and the machine is beginning to show it's age. That's all. If you are comfortable with that, then you should be ok.

Does everyone concur with that assessment?

for school i'd say no. for gaming i'd say it's great. as long as you have a hard flat surface where ever you take it. battery life sux. as long as you can reach a plug. the fx-60 will come down on price someday. and you can always sell the 4800. that's just a thought.

I'm going to order today with the slowest dual core with hope sof upgrading to the fx-60 in about 6 months when its half the price. probably only going to go with 1 gig of ram too and upgrade that later as well, but I won't skimp out on the video card or the 7200 rpm hard drive

It's not full time school. It's several classes for 2 days every other week. Does that affect in any way your nay vote for school purposes?

Are you going with Raid 0, or do you think the performance boost doesn't justify the price difference?
